January 15. 2015 2:00AM Letters to the Editor, Jan. 15 Get out now With regard to the proposed Jordan Cove LNG pipeline, on top of the ill-conceived idea of this disaster waiting to happen on so many levels, with the price of oil at $50 a barrel and the possibility of it going lower, perhaps the investors should look at the long-term return on their investment. With the inevitability of a carbon tax coming down the pike in the next few years, and the Chinese building more renewable power plants, maybe it's time to get out before this thing goes bust. In the meantime Southern Oregon would have a 3 foot by 230-mile tube shoved up where literally the sun don't shine. Rob Joseph, Ashland Bring it downtown I support others' opinions regarding moving the Christmas tree and decorations downtown back to where it was. Main Street is the heart of downtown. Let's see it brought back to "downtown" so everyone can enjoy the tree and decorations. B. Fisher, Medford Intellectual dishonesty An "educable moment" occurs when something happens that is usable to promote learning. Many times the claims of climate science deniers are too obscure to allow easy checking. Roger Bezdek (Sunday's point/counterpoint), however, simplifies them so we can check them out — a great science classroom exercise. Fox Opinion and science deniers alike reject well-understood physical properties of matter. Our understanding that carbon dioxide absorbs heat is nearly 200 years old, and has been subsequently demonstrated repeatedly. If Bezdek bothered to check the science he could find it. Denying that sea level rise occurs when water warms, or when ice flowss from land into oceans, also requires rejecting known physical properties of matter. Drop an ice cube in a glass of water; see water level rise! Melting of polar ice is well documented. It isn’t the area covered by the ice (melting ice blocks drift and appear to expand the area covered); it’s the ice mass. Undeniable data show that both Arctic and Antarctic ice masses are dwindling. The same intellectual honesty is expected in writing as in court testimony — where it’s a commitment. Yet repeatedly Bezdek just lies and misinforms. Conclusions justified by lies and misinformation are worthless.
