The Southern Oregon University freshman pole vaulter won his specialty Saturday at the Oregon Twilight Meet, setting a personal best, a school record and defeating last year’s NCAA champion. Johnston, from Eagle Point, cleared 17-4½ at Hayward Field to break the school record for the fifth time this season. His previous best was 17-3, also established at the University of Oregon track. "That’s kind of how he’s been all year," said Raiders assistant coach Grier Gatlin. "He went 17-3 here previously. It’s Tracktown USA. There are a lot of people watching and cheering, and it’s good, quality competition. He rises to that all the time. Advertisement "Not only is he talented, but he’s a competitor. That’s a good combination." Oregon’s Tommy Skipper was among those taking a back seat to Johnston. Skipper won the NCAA title last year and has a career best of 18-10¼ . Skipper cleared 17-0¾ , then passed at 17-4½ , which Johnston cleared. Skipper then came in at 17-9 and failed to negotiate the height. Johnston also missed. "It doesn’t matter who you throw in there, he’s going to compete," said Gatlin. Also for SOU, Emily Dunn, Ashley Black, Jasen Hartford and Jeremiah Lewman posted personal bests. Dunn, a sophomore from North Medford, clocked a 25.77 to place second in the 200 meters, and she won the 100 in 12.64. Black finished third in the 100 in 12.81 — eight-hundredths of a second faster than last week’s PR. Hartford, a freshman from Yamhill-Carlton High, placed third in the 200 at 21.86, and Lewman, a freshman from North Valley High, improved his NAIA meet provisional qualifier status by a half- second with a fourth-place 54.50. Distance star Trevor Palmer turned in an impressive 4:07 in a fifth-place effort in the prestigious mile run. Another highlight of the meet was by Oregon freshman Galen Rupp, who broke the U.S. junior record en route to the win in the 10,000 in 28:15.52. Rudy Chapa set the previous mark of 28:32.8 in 1976. Softball SOUTHERN OREGON 3-10, WESTERN BAPTIST 0-0 — At Salem, having already clinched a third consecutive Cascade Conference softball title, 25th-ranked Southern Oregon University limited Western Baptist College to six singles in a doubleheader sweep. The Raiders (36-17, 19-6 Cascade) enter next week’s NAIA Region I Tournament in Ashland having improved on their conference-best ERA with the shutouts. Senior ace Miranda Gillaspie (20-7) tossed a four-hitter in Game 1, and the Southern Oregon offense plated single unearned runs in the first, third and fifth innings. In Game 2, the Raiders used the long ball to make short work of WBC starter Rachel Hiatt (8-13). Amy Williams followed a Kara Ray double with a blast to center in the top of the first inning. Ray singled in the third and scored again on a home run — this time on an opposite-field shot by Amanda Burch — to make it 4-0. Burch tied the school single-season homer record (eight). Meanwhile, Julianne Cree (9-6) cruised to the five-inning victory, allowing only a base hit in the second and fifth innings. Cree struck out eight and walked two in extending her scoreless inning streak to 201/3 .
