Our View: Winters continues to be invisible Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 29, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Sep. 29, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters was nowhere to be found during the videotaping of a forum that was supposed to include him and his November challenger, Ashland Deputy Chief Corey Falls. That comes as no surprise to many, who say Winters lack of availability has become standard procedure during his current term in office. The forum, scheduled by the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, was set up to be videotaped at Rogue Valley TV — and it was, but with only Falls in attendance. Not only was Winters was a no-show, he never bothered to call the Chamber organizers to tell them he wouldn't make it. The sheriff's disappearing act  hardly comes a shock to people who try to reach him to discuss issues he's involved in. It's telling that in the story discussing his no-show, it was also reported that "Calls to Winters (by a reporter) were not returned." That has become the Winters' way: leading from behind closed doors. He is rarely available for comment on matters regarding the Sheriff's Office. He has attempted to address that by spending a portion of his department's budget on a public information officer. Winters' seemingly cavalier attitude toward his constituents comes at a dangerous time for him if he is truly interested in retaining his seat, especially after he finished a distant second to Falls in the May primary.
