South Medford captures Arizona sweep Tuesday Mar 27, 2018 at 2:00 AM Mar 27, 2018 at 10:28 PM GOODYEAR, Ariz. — South Medford’s baseball team took different paths but found similar results in a pair of games Tuesday, scoring an 11-1 mercy-rule win over Wheat Ridge of Colorado and then rallying for a 5-4 triumph over Thurston in games played at the Pride Classic at Desert Edge High School. The comeback win for the Panthers (4-1) against Thurston (4-2), of Springfield, was especially impressive considering the Colts stand to be one of the top 5A teams in Oregon. South Medford built a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Jaylin Parnell in the first inning that plated Jacob Melton and Clint Campbell, but Thurston came back to tie the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Jaalen Owens supplied a leadoff triple and later the Panthers got an RBI single by Parnell, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and an RBI sacrifice fly by Zac Ankeny. The game was tied at 4-all heading into the seventh inning when, after two outs, Ankeny walked and quickly advanced to third base on an errant pickoff attempt by Thurston reliever Dalton Travelstead. Ankeny then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the seventh, South Medford reliever struck out the first two batters then induced a groundout to clinch the victory. Owens and Daniel Shenk joined Parnell with two hits apiece, while Brandon Letendre earned the win by allowing four runs (three unearned) on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Against Wheat Ridge, Carle needed only 51 pitches to finish the five-inning affair, striking out three with no walks and four hits allowed. The Panthers gave him an early cushion with six first-inning runs on five hits and then Melton helped seal the early finish with a two-run home run — his third of the spring — in the third inning. Campbell went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and Jack Thompson was 2-for-2 to pace South. NORTH MEDFORD 7, AIR ACADEMY 3: At Surprise, Ariz., Josh Robbins went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run, for North Medford during the Pride Classic at Valley Vista High. Robbins, who added a double, sent the 330-foot shot with two outs in the fourth inning to drive in Jon-o Gassman. The Black Tornado (3-1) added three runs in the seventh against the Colorado school. BEND 9, GRANTS PASS 1: At Grants Pass, Bend senior Cole Frey blasted a first-inning grand slam and finished with five RBIs overall as Bend toppled Grants Pass for an opening-day win in the Crater Spring Break Invitational. The Lava Bears (2-1) used four pitchers to toss a three-hitter against the Cavemen (2-3), with Braeden Bellum, Sean Tobin and Andrew Medley doing the honors for GP. Frodge’s bases-loaded double scored three in the first inning, when the Comets (3-0) tallied seven runs. Winning pitcher Jacob Memmott allowed one walk and three hits and struck out seven against Ridgeview (1-4). In other tournament games, Bend topped Grants Pass 9-1, Sunset edged McMinnville 7-6 and Southridge secured a 16-1 win over Madison.
