It is a wonderful place to take my dogs 4 to 5 times a week. There is a rumor that it will be closed when the much smaller dog park is opened at Hawthorne Park this summer. — Andrea K., Medford No need for you or your pooches to set up a howl on this one, Andrea, because we have good news for all of you. Brian Sjothun, the head honcho at the Medford Parks and Recreation Department, assures us that, and we quote, "... The Bear Creek Park off-leash facility will remain open." In fact, there are discussions not only about opening several new "off-leash areas" (we'll just call them dog parks) but also about making improvements to the one that does exist at Bear Creek Park. As you mentioned, a new dog park is scheduled to open in Hawthorne Park, although it won't be smaller than the Bear Creek site — it's scheduled to be the same size: 3 acres. There are also plans for several other dog parks, including one at the U.S. Cellular Sports Park, tentatively scheduled to open in 2016. Others on the list include Cedar Links Park (2016-18) and, possibly, Lone Pine Park, Donahue-Frohnmayer Park, Howard Park and Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The last four would have to go through a master plan update and planning process before being designated. The city's plans for dog parks call for basic elements of lighting, water, shade, perimeter walking paths, benches and engineered wood chips.
