Victim named in Central Point killing By Mail Tribune staff Jun 07, 2019 02:48 PM A A A Jackson County man has been identified as the victim in a Thursday morning shooting near Central Point. The Jackson County Medical Examiner determined Robert Leroy Mitchell, Jr., 47, died of a gunshot wound to the chest in the 200 block of Hanley Road, according to a release issued Friday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies found Mitchell’s body at about 5:50 a.m. while responding to a report of an altercation between two people, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Julie Denney. Mitchell had been involved in an altercation with a 33-year-old woman, who has not been named and has not been charged with a crime. Denney did not release information about what led to the shooting, because Mitchell’s death is still under investigation, but she said the shooting was not a suicide and that the woman was the only person involved in the altercation. Josephine County Circuit Court records show that Mitchell had served more than 5-1/2 years in prison for assault and was released in 2013.
