Medford upped its season record to 31-9 and has won 16 of its last 18 games. Evan McArthur extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a 3-for-4, four RBI output. McArthur provided a two-run double in each of the first two innings. In the Stangs’ five-run second inning, Matt Skundrick followed McArthur’s run-producing double with his team-high ninth home run of the season Medford took advantage of some sloppy fielding by Red Lion to score one run in the eighth that ended the game due to the 10-run mercy rule. Jimmy Ulrey opened the eighth with a single and was safe at second when Vancouver second baseman Kyle Cristel hit Ulrey trying for a force play on Dustin Butler’s grounder. Ulrey scored when pitcher Owen Frazier fielded Nathan Emerson’s one-hopper, but threw the ball into center field trying to initiate a double play. Ryan Heil had two hits for the Mustangs and now has hit safely in 28 out of 29 games. Other Mustangs with two hits were Brett Timmerman, Eric Kessler, Butler and Ulrey. Rob Folsom (4-1) allowed four hits and struck out four in seven innings to register his fourth victory in five decisions. Cristel had two hits for Red Lion. Medford will be back in Area 4 action with a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Monday against the Central Point Comets at Anhorn Field. NORTH JACKSON 12-4, PHOENIX 3-1 — At Eagle Point, North Jackson overcame 10 errors in the American Legion A Area 4 doubleheader with strong pitching performances from Ryan Garrett and Brandon Willer. In the opener, Garrett pitched a two-hit complete game with three strikeouts and four walks. All three Phoenix runs were unearned. Mark Farrell provided the offensive spark for the Royals (20-15, 10-6 Area 4) with four hits and five RBIs. In Game 2, Brandon Willer (2-1) tossed a one-hitter and struck out 16. Willer also went 2-for-3 and drove in one run. The only hit for Phoenix came on Zach Zupan’s grounder off Willer’s glove with two out in the fourth inning. The Royals got all the runs they would need by scoring two runs in the second. Willer singled with one out and Ricky O’Callahan followed with a base hit. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, then Richie Cruz delivered a two-out, two-run single. Amateur Baseball SOUTHERN OREGON 16-12, TOLEDO 4-3 — At Toledo, Mike Newmann clubbed a pair of home runs, whacked a double and drove in seven runs to power the red-hot Southern Oregon Riverdogs to a doubleheader sweep of the Toledo Mudsharks. The 16-4 and 12-3 victories boosted the Riverdogs to 14-7 in the Oregon Baseball Association and 31-13 overall. Southern Oregon has also won 24 of its past 27 games. Newmann hit a two-run homer in the third inning of Game 1 and then connected for a three-run shot in the Riverdogs’ seven-run seventh inning. Newmann added two singles in Game 1 added a single and double in the nightcap. Phil Ouellette was a busy batter, too, swatting two doubles and a pair of singles in Game 1. Henley High graduate Brad Bailey fired a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts to win the opener and raise his record to 6-0. In the nightcap, Rogue River product Steve Pergin fired a three-hitter and the Riverdogs took advantage of 13 walks to win going way. Along with Newmann, Nate Mayben had two hits in Game 2. Babe Ruth 14-YEAR-OLD SOUTH STATE TOURNAMENT — At Central Point, Medford Blue advanced into the championship round with a 15-0 five-inning win over Upper Rogue. Medford will have to beat undefeated Willamette from Eugene twice today to win the tournament. Medford suffered a 6-3 loss to Willamette in the opening round. In earlier game Saturday, Medford defeated Grants Pass, 12-2, while Willamette handed Upper Rogue its first loss, 4-0. Little League 11-12 LITTLE LEAGUE STATE TOURNAMENT — At Salem, Zach Earle’s two-run single in the seventh inning broke a 7-7 tie and lifted Medford American to a 9-7 victory over LaGrande in an opening-round game of the 11-12 Little League State Tournament. E.J. Singler, Kody Stevens and Tyler Thorson each had two hits for Medford American, which meets Bend at 2 p.m. today. Andrew Bennett threw the final two innings to get the win. Medford American reached the state tournament by defeating Klamath Falls South Suburban 7-2 in extra meets Friday. 9-10-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Klamath Falls, Matt Maurer pitched a three-hit complete game and went 3-for-4 to pace the Medford Americans to a 13-2 opening-round victory over Roseburg in the eight-team tournament. Maurer struck out nine in the six-inning contest. He also scored three runs. Colin Sowers contribued to the American’s 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4, four-RBI performance that included a double and triple. Medford’s next game in the double-elimination tournament is at 10 a.m. today at the Klamath Falls South Suburban Little League field. ASA Softball ASA NORTHWEST REGIONAL — Corey Whitaker went 4-for-4 and Darcy Cordell and Megan Ruhn added two hits each to lead the Black Tornado to a 10-3 victory over Diamond Divas of Richland, Wash., at the ASA 16-and-under Northwest Regional Softball Tournament. Mallorie Hoover threw five strong innings to get the win on the mound. The Tornado (26-9) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Washington Hurricanes later Saturday but, with a 3-1 record, remains alive in the double-elimination Little League Softball 9-10-YEAR OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Milton-Freewater, the Medford American girls rallied for two runs in the last inning to beat Pendleton 7-6 in its opener in the eight-team event. Medford advances to a second-round game against Crook County at 6 p.m. today. Pendleton scored one run in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. But the Americans answered when Jordan Jones opened with a single and scored to tie the game on an overthrow at first on Nicki Jones’ grounder. Nicki Jones went to second on the error and came around to score the winning run on two passed balls. Pitcher Alissa Stormberg went the distance for Medford.
