Pitchers Keri Sevano of North Medford and Jessica Morton of Grants Pass were both overpowering. But North Medford prevailed 3-1 in a game that went 17 innings and took almost five hours to play. The Black Tornado rode the arm and bat of sophomore Kendra Strahm to complete a sweep with an 11-1 six-inning victory in the nightcap. "It came down to 17 innings and we cracked," Grants Pass coach Clay Roundsaville said. "We made some mistakes and North capitalized. Even though we lost, it was hard to be disappointed." Darcy Cordell opened the 17th with a base hit for North and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandi Paxton. Corey Whitaker followed with a blast to deep centerfield that went for a triple. Whitaker eventually scored the Black Tornado’s second run after a fielder’s choice and an error. Sevano got one of her 14 strikeouts in putting the Cavers down in order to end the extra-inning contest. "It was an experience of a lifetime," North Medford coach Brent Barry said. "She (Sevano) was absolutely phenonomenal. We were up against the ropes a lot. She beared down and got the job done when we needed it." Morton was no less spectacular in ringing up 20 strikeouts. Strahm was the story of Game 2. The sophomore allowed a first-inning base hit to leadoff hitter Megan Sander, then blanked Grants Pass without a hit the rest of the way. In addition to her six strikeout, no walk performance, Strahm went 4-for-4 with two RBIs. "She (Strahm) did exactly what she needed to do," said Barry. "She threw strikes and used her defense." North (9-0, 4-0 SOC) staked the Strahm to six runs in the top of the first inning. The Black Tornado used six hits and two walks to fuel the outburst. Strahm’s RBI single in the sixth accounted for the last of four runs in the inning that gave North an 11-1 lead.
