Mustangs unable to deny Challengers By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jul 16, 2022 08:38 PM A A EUGENE — Medford scored three first-inning runs before a drought set in, opening the door for the Eugene Challengers to stage a wild late-inning rally and secure a 4-3 win in eight innings Saturday at Swede Johnson Stadium. The contest was the opening game of an American League doubleheader between the Area 4 leaders, who each entered the twin bill with unblemished 4-0 league records. Game 2 was still going as of press time. The two teams are set to meet again in another doubleheader Sunday at Harry & David Field. The first game starts at 5 p.m. Cody Borraggine and Tanner Douglas each had singles in the first inning for the Mustangs (27-7, 4-1 Area 4), with Douglas driving home Borraggine before Cameron Sewell scored on an error off a ball put in play by Aiden Horsley. Douglas later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0. After that, however, Medford was unable to send more than four batters to the plate in an inning until the eighth, when Jace Miller was hit by a pitch and Kyle Cope drew a walk to put two runners on with only one out. Eugene (36-11, 5-0) was able to get out of the threat with a flyout and a strikeout. The Challengers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single, then scored the winning run in extra innings after a leadoff walk issued by Borraggine and a subsequent throwing error by the pitcher.
