Mail Tribune / Jim Craven North Eugene hands Black Tornado first loss North Medford got off to a quick start against North Eugene pitcher Cody Newell in non-conference baseball Friday at Miles Field. The second-ranked Black Tornado scored three runs in the first two innings, but Newell found a groove and blanked North Medford the rest of the way and rallied for a 4-3 victory. The loss was the Black Tornado’s first after opening the season with three wins. "We’re disappointed with the loss," North Medford coach Brett Wolfe said, "but their kid on the mound was pretty good. You have to give him credit." Newell allowed just five hits, struck out five and walked six. The Highlanders committed their only two errors in the first inning as North Medford scored twice to take the initial lead. Reese Lamson reached on a two-out error to get the rally started, then went all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Dustin Butler followed with an RBI double. On the next pitch, Jimmy Ulrey doubled to score Butler. After North Eugene scored one run in the second, the Black Tornado answered right back on Rob Folsom’s two-out home run to deep left field. North Eugene used two-out RBI singles by Zach Bird and James Mannion to tie the game at 3-all in the fifth. Black Tornado starter Brett Timmerman, who pitched five innings Monday against Mazama, was pulled after throwing 98 pitches through five innings. Timmerman struck out six and allowed two earned runs. "He (Timmerman) was mentally tough," said Wolfe. "He didn’t have his best stuff but got ahead of the hitters and changed speed well. He gave us a chance to win the ballgame." Shawn Peterson provided North Eugene with the winning hit with two outs in the seventh against reliever Folsom. Mannion opened with a single and was sacrificed to second. After Aaron Greer walked, Peterson blooped a single over third, scoring Mannion. "We thought we had him (Peterson) struck out the pitch before," said Wolfe. "Rob comes back and throws a great pitch on the hands. The kid fisted it, and it just had enough to drop in the hole." North Medford threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Engle walked with two outs and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Lamson flied out to deep center on a 3- 2 pitch to end the game. "We made a couple of mental mistakes on the bases that caused us outs," said Wolfe. "We tried to be aggressive, but in close ballgames, you don’t have room to make mistakes."
