LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 18 MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 18, 2016 @ 12:01 am Posted May. 18, 2016 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Protect hydro power The Tribune reported the Obama administration will allow wind turbines generating electricity to potentially kill or injure up to 4,200 bald eagles a year without penalty. Also, a federal judge ruled that a massive habitat restoration to improve salmon runs in the Columbia basin does not do enough. The ruling gives a major victory to those hoping to see the four dams on the Snake River breached. The electrical generating capacity of these four Snake River dams is 3,033 megawatts. Using Pacific Power’s estimate of 750-1,000 homes powered per megawatt, this equates, on the conservative side, to power for 2,274,750 homes. The Klamath River’s four dams provide power for approximately 70,000 homes. The cleanest energy sources include solar, wind and hydropower. Hydropower is a renewable resource and produces virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. It meets the strictest definition of renewable 24/7. However, state governments’ “Renewable Portfolio Standards” for electricity generation do not include hydropower. The common theme among these standards: Hydropower is not a renewable energy resource. The reason: it’s political, because dams impede fish passage. If the dams are breached, where will our clean and renewable power come from at the magnitude described above without endangering something, including ourselves? Blair Moody Medford Boats threaten lake The heading "Crater Lake threat" and the picture of the lake with boats on it go hand in hand. It doesn't take a scientist or college-educated person to figure out why the clarity of the lake is starting to deteriorate, especially when there are boats, boat docks and humans on the so-called pristine lake. The scientists are saying that the water mixing churns up the nutrients, so forth and so on. The scientists won't say that the motor boats are a contributing factor and should be taken out, because the Park Service would lose too much revenue from the boat tours. I wrote a letter to the editor Oct. 9, 2013, about the boats and their pollutants. That is called gas algae, which forms underwater on the sides and bottom. Put a stop to it now! Harold Saunders Jacksonville Campaign of deception Being ignorant is no character flaw. Ignorance just means being uninformed about something. There is nothing wrong with being ignorant. None of us can know all about everything; inevitably we are ignorant about some issues. Luckily, we can overcome ignorance by committing to informing ourselves. The problem is not ignorance; the problem, abundantly demonstrated by Donald Trump, is being ignorant and thinking our opinion has merit. Darrell Monk makes this mistake (letters, May 7). Apparently he saw a 1970s Readers Digest article and thought it offered accurate information. Contrary to his source, the majority of climate scientists in the 1970s were not warning of global cooling. Had Mr. Monk bothered to consult the scientific literature of the era, or reputable summaries of that literature, he would learn the claim is false. In fact, 1970s climate scientists were generally warning about warming. Now that it is clear to everyone with eyes and ears that the ignorant claim global warming has slowed down is patently false, science deniers are again trotting out such long debunked claims as this. Regrettably, like mercifully few others, Mr. Monk has been suckered by the campaign of deception launched decades ago by fossil fuel corporations.
