PORTLAND Ashland junior E.J. Holland continued his torrid pace at 5,000 meters this season, running away from a talented field to lower his own state-best mark of the cross country season Saturday with a first-place finish at the Warner Pacific Classic at Lents Park. Holland shaved more time off his top effort this season by crushing the field with a time of 14 minutes, 53.20 seconds well ahead of runner-up Austen Apperson of Washington’s Adna High School (15:16.10) and third-place finisher Aidan Palmer of Franklin High (15:19.50). Holland’s outing is 23 seconds faster than the second-best mark in all classifications this season, a time of 15:16.2 turned in by McMinnville senior Zane Fodge last week. Holland also went under 15 minutes on Sept. 15 at the Northwest Classic (14:59.2). With Ashland junior Arlo Davis placing fifth (15:24.10) and sophomore Reed Pryor 26th (16:12.50), the Grizzlies were able to place fifth in the boys gold division with a 164 total. Franklin won the event with 65 points, followed by Sunset (116), South Eugene (119) and West Linn (147). South Medford’s boys team finished seventh in the gold race, with senior Tanner Sayers leading the charge by placing eighth in 15:41.30. Panthers junior Truett Bostwick was 16th in 15:52.30 and senior Reed Hungerford 34th (16:22.60). In the girls gold division, South Medford finished 13th with 354 points in a race dominated by Summit, which won with 27 points and had five of the top nine times. Leading the way for the Panthers was sophomore Emma Schmerbach, who was 26th in 18:52.30 after winning her second straight Max King Invitational in Central Point on Wednesday in 18:36.7. Ashland senior Alexa Hague was 34th in 19:02.90 to pace her team, which placed 19th with 441 points. Volleyball WEST LINN TOURNAMENT: At Portland, North Medford played well to go .500 against tough competition in morning pool play action before going 0-2 in bracket play to place seventh in the silver bracket. The Black Tornado (16-10) beat St. Mary’s Academy of Portland in straight sets, 25-23, 25-14, to start the day, then dropped a tough one to perennial powerhouse Central Catholic, 26-24, 25-13. In bracket play, Roseburg beat North Medford 25-17, 25-22, and Crook County topped the Tornado, 25-23, 25-16. North Medford head coach Malcolm Munson said Tornado senior libero Ella Ivens made a lot of tough digs and was also great in serve-receive. ASHLAND DROPS TWO: At Eugene, Ashland came up short in a pair of Midwestern League road matches, falling to 4-12 overall and 4-9 in MWL play. North Eugene topped the Grizzlies 25-14, 27-25, 25-19 in the opening match of the day, then Thurston scored a 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 victory in the nightcap. GLIDE 3, BUTTE FALLS/CRATER LAKE 1: At Butte Falls, Jaimee Byrum had nine kills and Ellie Columbus led a solid defensive effort with 21 digs and seven blocks but Butte Falls/Crater Lake couldn’t pull off the upset against Class 2A Southern Cascade League-leading Glide. Glide moved to 15-5 overall and 10-1 in league play with the 25-9, 25-13, 21-25, 25-10 victory. Butte Falls (2-10, 2-8 SCL) managed 89 digs overall, getting 14 apiece from Adrianna Watanabe, Jaimee Byrum and Rocky Scott. Football BUTTE FALLS/CRATER LAKE 50, GLENDALE 26: At Butte Falls, Tanner Thomson had 177 yards and three touchdowns receiving and Dylan Bridges passed for 254 yards and five touchdowns as Butte Falls/Crater Lake rallied from a 26-16 halftime deficit to win going away in the Class 1A District 2 West matchup. Thomson had touchdown receptions of 45, 50 and 60 yards while also gaining 57 yards on the ground for Butte Falls (4-2, 2-2 Dist. 2), which outscored the visitors 22-0 in the fourth quarter. Defensively, Kai Hansen picked off a pass, Thomson had a team-high eight tackles and the Loggers scooped up two fumble recoveries. Elijah McDaniel threw a touchdown pass and caught another for Glendale (1-6, 1-3).
