When I entered Medford High in 1950, the change had been made — the trophy cabinet still had Tiger stuff in it, but the Tornado was here. — Keith V., Medford Now don’t go bashing our guru, Keith; his turban is still on straight. A few questions were raised over our Monday answer to Since You Asked, in which we said the name change became official in 1953. And, guess what, that’s right. That’s the year students voted to make Black Tornado the new mascot. Advertisement What wasn’t entirely clear in our answer was that the school had been using two mascot names for several years. The Black Tornado name at first was used only for the football team, but gained more and more prominence among students and supporters until, in 1953, the new name was officially adopted.
