According to a CHP press release, at about 6:53 a.m., officers stopped to check a vehicle that had been parked on the right shoulder of Interstate 5 southbound north of the North Weed Boulevard exit. Upon contacting the only occupant of the vehicle, officers observed a firearm before the motorist sped away, the release states. After a pursuit, officers deployed a spike strip, disabling the vehicle in the center divider of the highway near Mott Road in Siskiyou County. Shortly after, a shootout occurred. The Record Searchlight in Redding, quoting CHP spokewoman Lacey Heitman, reported that four officers were involved and the driver of the vehicle died. Heitman told the newspaper the driver pulled a gun on officers but none of the officers were injured. The CHP’s Critical Incident Investigative Team, its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation. The Record Searchlight said southbound I-5 just north of Dunsmuir was closed for seven hours. This is the second officer-involved shooting after a pursuit in Siskiyou County in less than three weeks. On July 13, Matthew Graham, of Shasta County, was fatally shot after he stole a car at gunpoint in Siskiyou County and got into a shootout with sheriff's deputies in Dunsmuir. Graham was suspected in the disappearance of his baby daughter, Ember, who has not been found and is assumed dead.
