SOU's Rosero, Beltz star at Cascade championships By SOU Sports Information May 11, 2019 09:32 PM A A 44 View all photos ASHLAND — Southern Oregon had a milestone celebration Saturday at Raider Stadium after chipping away at its 10th title in the 25th annual Cascade Conference men’s track and field championships. SOU’s Grier Gatlin was voted the men’s coach of the year for leading the Raiders to their fifth championship in the last seven seasons, accumulating 180.5 points to second-place College of Idaho’s 153.5. The Raiders began the day 17.5 points back of the Yotes. Junior Raider sprinter Chris Rosero earned men’s track athlete of the meet after winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and running legs on SOU’s 4x100 relay title team and the third-place 4x400 squad. His teammate, senior Zach Beltz, made history again Saturday, setting a CCC meet record in the triple jump at 50 feet, 7 inches, after doing the same Friday in the long jump (25-10). Corban’s Michael Schmidt — the CCC champion in the decathlon and 400-meter hurdles, and the anchor for the Warriors in their 4x400 win — was the field athlete of the meet, while Eastern Oregon took the inaugural sportsmanship award. In the women’s meet, senior Joanna Galli became the first Raider to win the pole vault title in six years, helping SOU to third place. Rosero became the fifth Raider to win the 100 in seven years and also became the conference’s first NAIA provisional qualifier of the season by blazing in at 10.69 seconds. He beat out OIT’s Donnie Pate (10.91) and British Columbia’s Saif Zaman (10.92), while his Raider teammates Eli Chapman (10.99) and Beltz (11.03) placed fourth and sixth. In the 200, Rosero (21.73) and OIT’s Pate (22.19) performed true to their seeds as the top-two finishers, while Chapman earned key points with an All-CCC third-place finish in 22.28 seconds as the No. 5 seed. The triple jump title was Beltz’s third, and his mark broke a 3-year-old record and established a personal best. Runner-up Keith Bailey of College of Idaho was well back at 47-1. Galli, in her first year with the Raiders, cleared 11-11 and won a tiebreaker by criteria over Eastern Oregon’s Payton Jolley. Arianna Daniel, after winning the 400 race on Friday, followed up with second-place efforts in the 100 and 200 before helping SOU’s 4x400 relay team to third place. The Raiders totaled 140 points. CCC newcomer British Columbia won with 180 and Eastern Oregon claimed second with 165. Daniel is now a 15-time overall All-CCC performer, including relays, and Savannah Greenwade’s third-place showing in the 200 made her an eight-time All-CCC honoree. Loghan Sprauer — who placed third in the heptathlon at the CCC Multi-Event Championships — scored 26 points over five events at the meet, not including her anchor run for the 4x400 team, and has now scored 70 by herself in three years at the CCC Championships.
