The Panthers never trailed in either game but had to survive Eagle Point comebacks in both to secure a sweep. South eventually prevailed 7-6 in the opener and 5-3 in the second game at North Medford High. "Not to take anything away from Eagle Point, but hopefully our best baseball is ahead of us," South Medford coach Steve Antich said. "We’re going to have to keep getting better. We’re absolutely glad to get away with two wins today." In Game 1, the Panthers (9-2, 5-1 SOC) built a 5-0 lead after three innings only to see the Eagles come back and tie the game 6-all in the fifth. Dan Chancler’s two-run triple and RBI singles by Marcus James and Ryan O’Dell highlighted the Panthers’ five-run third inning. Advertisement As it turned out, South Medford needed its at-bat in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run. James opened the rally with a single, followed by bunt singles by Logan Boyd and Justin Meyer to load the bases with none out. Jared Adamson capitalized on a drawn in infield to score James with a groundball single. Trailing 6-3 in the fifth inning, the Eagles (4-7, 1-5 SOC) tied the score on a two-run double by Derek Grieve and Jeremy Carvajal’s run-scoring triple. Meyer was 3-for-5 to pace the Panthers’ 15-hit attack, while Chancler had a triple and home run with three RBIs. Carvajal led the Eagles with three hits. "It took us a few innings to get going," said Antich. "To Eagle Point’s credit, they scrapped back from down five and made a game of it. I don’t know if we relaxed a little bit." In Game 2, South got a complete-game performance from junior pitcher Tommy George, who gave up eight singles. "It’s easy to play defense behind (George) because he works quick and throws strikes," said Antich. "He didn’t give up any big hits." Chancler keyed the South offense by singling and scoring on Boyd’s sacrifice fly in the first, then walking and scoring one of two Panther runs in the third. James and Meyer provided RBI singles in the third. "When Chancler gets on base it definitely jump starts our offense," said Antich. South scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when Boyd walked with one out, Meyer doubled and Adamson hit a sacrifice fly. Meyer scored when Mark Austad reached on an error. In the nightcap, the Panthers collected two hits each from Meyer and Eric Mobbs, while Carvajal had two hits for the Eagles. L — Staller. 2B — SM: Meyer. CRATER 4-7, ASHLAND 3-1 — At Central Point, Tony Davidson and Chris Thomas pitched Crater (5-6, 2-4 SOC) to a pair of SOC wins. Davidson recorded his first win against three losses in the opener, while Thomas gave up one run to improve to 3-1 after the nightcap. Thomas also provided a two-run single in the fifth inning of Game 1 to put Crater ahead 4-0. Ashland (3-8, 1-5) scored twice in the sixth and had the bases loaded in its final at-bat but couldn’t come up with the tying run. Robbie Bruce went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Grizzlies. In Game 2, Jesse Bailey had two hits for the Comets and Josh Surgeon provided two RBIs. Sam Littleton was 2-for-3 for Ashland.
