PREP TRACK AND FIELD St. Mary's wins boys, girls SCL titles Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 15, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 15, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Things went as planned for St. Mary’s at the Southern Cascade League Track and Field Championships. The Crusaders scored big and defended their boys and girls team titles in the district meet Saturday at St. Mary’s High. Cascade Christian finished second in both. The St. Mary’s boys scored 144 points, while the Crusader girls totaled 127 points. “We wanted to come out and run well at our home facility,” said St. Mary’s coach Joe Volk. “Kid after kid competed well. We sent the kids we expected to state plus a couple of extra that we weren’t anticipating.” On the boys side, St. Mary’s thrower Josh Martin set a 3A state best in the shot put at 48 feet, 10 inches, bettering his previous best of 46-5¼. And Martin won the discus (140-01) with the second-best 3A throw. “Josh is really coming into his form these last few weeks,” said Volk. “He’s ready to roll.” Mark Wyant won twice for the Crusaders. He captured the 400 meters (52.22) and 300 hurdles (42.24, No. 4 in 3A). Cascade Christian’s Zach Booker won the long jump (20-7) and the triple jump (41-2¼). Rio Lopez was Rogue River’s top performer with a victory in the 1,500 and a third in the 800. The St. Mary’s girls set 3A bests in both relays, got two individual victories (800, 300 hurdles) and a second (3,000) from Emma Bennion and two wins from Marissa Dobry (1,500, 3,000). “I’m very proud of our distance girls,” said Volk. “We swept all the state placements in our distance events.” The top two placers in each event qualify for the state track meet Thursday and Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene. MIDWESTERN LEAGUE: At Eagle Point, 15 locals finished in the top two during Day 2 of the Class 5A Midwestern League championships at Eagle Point High. The other local girl winners were Eagle Point's Marinda Stanton (triple jump), Crater's Jordan Monroe (1,500) and Ashland's Myla Norvell (javelin). The Eagles' Ariana Marks claimed second in the 1,500 and 800, as did teammate Maya Bradd in the 100 hurdles and Crater's McKenna Presley in the high jump. Marist swept the team titles. The Comet boys finished second.
