Did Donald Trump ever come to Oregon during the presidential election in 2016? I know he didn’t win the state, but I wonder if he skipped us because he knew what the outcome would be? — Jim, Medford Yes, Jim, he did visit the Beaver State, in May 2016, holding a primary campaign rally in, of all places, Eugene (which could give Portland and Ashland a run for their money as the state’s most liberal enclave). After securing the Republican nomination, Trump’s campaign had scheduled an August appearance in, of all places, Portland (see above) but canceled that to go to Louisiana, which was recovering from disastrous flooding that destroyed or damaged nearly 150,000 homes. That seemed like a reasonable decision, and perhaps helped him collect 58 percent of that state’s vote in the general election. That was considerably better than his results in Oregon, where he collected 39 percent of the vote. Prior to the cancellation of Trump’s Portland appearance, which was scheduled as a private fundraiser, the president-to-be’s team was scouting locations for a public rally in places ranging from Portland to Southern Oregon. Like the fundraiser, that didn’t happen. The Eugene visit apparently didn’t swing Lane County into the GOP camp. Trump pulled in 35 percent of the vote there, with some wags suggesting his repeated reference to the state as “Ore-gone” didn’t help his cause.
