No. 2 St. Mary's continues SCL streak GILCHRIST -- St. Mary's scored in bunches and remained undefeated in Southern Cascade League volleyball Friday with a doubleheader victory against Gilchrist. The second-ranked Crusaders (20-3, 5-0 SCL) defeated the host Grizzlies 15-2 and 15-9 in the opening match, then completed the sweep with a 14-16, 15-2 and 15-6 victory. "We wanted to get on them early," St. Mary's coach James Joy said. "To a point, we did that. It seemed like the first game of the second match we were pretty flat." In the opening match, St. Mary's only missed two serves. Kim Hansen led the way with 12 service points. Crusader freshman Kristina Easton erased an early 2-1 deficit in the first game with five straight service points. Then, with St. Mary's leading 8-2, Hansen served out the game. Maren Zielony led the Crusaders in the first match with six kills and five digs. After dropping the first game of the second match, St. Mary's came back strong. The Crusaders held a 3-2 lead when Jenny Gritsch served 12 straight points to end the second game. "Her serve kept them off balance, and we were getting a lot of free balls," said Joy. Lani Brophy opened the decisive third game with nine straight points from the serving line. Kristen Zielony had a solid second match for the Crusaders with nine kills, five blocks and nine digs. Maren Zielony contributed 16 digs and seven kills. BUTTE FALLS 15-15, NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN 7-4 -- At Butte Falls, New Hope posted a 6-0 lead in the first game, only to be outscored 30-5 the rest of the way in Skyline A action. Sophomore setter Jessica Dunlap served 11 of the Loggers' 15 points in the second game, including 10 straight. Dunlap also led Butte Falls (6-3, 5-0 Sky A) with 12 assists. Jade Torres notched six aces and five kills, while Liz McLauchlan added seven kills. PROSPECT 15-15, PAISLEY 5-9 -- At Prospect, Kary Linderman, Monica Applegate and Michelle Baker each had four kills to pace Prospect (5-3 Sky A).
