Letters to the Editor, March 1 Wednesday Mar 1, 2017 at 12:01 AM Sad All through history leaders have claimed, with no actual evidence, that they and their people are superior, to justify the violent victimization of others. The carnage of World War II, including the Holocaust, are a vivid 20th century example. In earlier American history white Christians, who falsely considered themselves superior, violently victimized Native Americans, enslaved Africans and then violently victimized African American former slaves. An alt-right leader is now in the White House as chief strategist. The current hateful Muslim ban comes from alt-right ideology, which falsely claims the superiority of white Christians, and the inferiority of all other racial, religious, and ethnic groups. A prime example of the absurdity of these claims is our new president, who satisfies the alt-right criteria for superiority by being a white Christian. But he is also a mean-spirited, greedy, bigoted bully, who lies incessantly and has bragged about sexually assaulting women. Are these really the attributes of a superior human being? Are these the qualities that most conscientious American parents want their children to acquire? Are these the moral values that most members of the clergy try to convey to their congregants? Sad. Oregon politicians passed laws three years ago that placed any salmon-bearing river or stream off limits to gold dredging (approximately 80 percent of water in Oregon). Gold dredgers have only a three-month legal work period each year. We must buy permits (revenue for the state of Oregon). We also have strict rules and laws we must adhere to. Now, special interest groups, with their politicians, want to stop gold dredging entirely. They are trying to pass new laws to ban gold dredging. These politicians are controlled by extreme environmentalists. They say that all these laws are about the salmon. If this is true, why does the state of Oregon sell licenses to fish for and kill the mating pairs of salmon? Where is the logic and fair government? It's not about the fish! It's about control and money! Ken Harnack Medford Honest research In the Feb. 28 letters, a writer called the Dairy Council a biased source of information. Right. She trusted "The China Study." Wrong. Who is more biased than scientists who preach veganism? There is a great difference between the China study, a nationwide observational study, and the book entitled "The China Study." The author used the study, but the book is mainly a long sermon on veganism, which is not supported in the study except by selection of data and omitting confounding factors. There was a time when science included the principle of proving your thesis wrong. A search for truth had to include a search for your own mistakes and omissions. Now, it is rare to find any research that is not a dishonest attempt to support a profitable bias. "The China Study" book is a prototype. My choice of an unbiased source is a 1939 book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration," by dentist Weston A. Price. Dr. Price was a vegetarian, but his principled research did not support that. His search for truth reveals what is causing much of our modern chronic diseases. This old book is still in print, and still a prototype of honest research. Ira Edwards Medford Dictatorship brewing It is instructive to read quotes of Hitler's propagandist, Joseph Goebbels (search online for "goebbels quotes"). They provide insight into Trump's campaign and first few weeks in office. Stephen Miller is a former aide to Jeff Sessions and now Trump's speech writer and member of his inner circle. Search online for "what stephen miller said msnbc" and listen to the compendium of Miller's interviews, including from Fox News. Miller is Goebbels incarnate. There is little doubt that we have a wannabe fascist dictatorship brewing in Washington with an unstable, delusional Trump being egged on by Miller and Bannon. Ted Gibbs Ashland
