Dunlap 3-pointer sinks Lakeview LAKEVIEW - Jennifer Dunlap made just one shot in the Phoenix Pirates' Skyline Conference girls basketball playoff victory over Lakeview - the winning one. The junior point guard sank a 3-point basket with just over one second remaining to lift the Pirates to a 44-43 come-from-behind victory Tuesday. Phoenix (9-15) advances in the conference playoffs to a Thursday game against third-place Hidden Valley. Tip-off time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Murphy. After the Honkers took a 43-41 lead with about 25 seconds left in the game, the Pirates worked the ball inside to Tiffany Ross, who missed at close range. Shannon Reed got the offensive rebound, but her putback was off target, too. A scramble for the rebound took place and the loose ball rolled to Dunlap at the top of the key. She responded with the game-winner. "We happened to get the ball bouncing in the right direction, and our kid made a shot," said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker. "She (Dunlap) was 1 of 9, but she made the right one." The Pirates, who stumbled the last two weeks of the regular season losing three of their final four games, finally had the ball bounce their way and posted a rare win in a close game. A Pirate victory looked very improbable at halftime, trailing 27-14. That's when Walker switched from his signature zone defense to a man-to-man. "They were getting too many open outside shots in the first half," said Walker. "It was the first time all year we really came out and played man defense. Then they missed a bunch of shots, and we started hitting some finally." Senior guard Jamie Cavener sparked the Phoenix comeback by tallying all 14 of her points in the second half to lead all scorers. Cavener scored eight points in the third quarter as Phoenix cut the deficit to 32-29 entering the final period. Cavener's three 3-pointers in the game gave her 21 for the season, breaking the previous school single-season record of 19 set by Jessica Prisbrey last year. Boys HIDDEN VALLEY 60, NORTH VALLEY 47 - At Merlin, Hidden Valley, the Skyline's fifth-place team, lost to North Valley (11-13) twice during the regular season, but the Mustangs made the most of their free-throw opportunities in the fourth quarter to upset the fourth-place Knights. Jeff Klug and Chris Jiron each scored 14 points to pace Hidden Valley, which plays at third-place Rogue River Thursday. The winner of that game advances to a Class 3A state playoff game Saturday against defending state champion Marist. The Mustangs (9-16) connected on 13 of 17 free throws in the final period. Sophomore guard Skyler Ogden delivered a clutch 8-for-8 performance from the line in the fourth quarter. North Valley sophomore sensation Sean Gronholm led all scorers with 19 points. But Derek Wright, who burned the Mustangs for 23 points when the team's met last Tuesday, was held to four.
