Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 5, 2006 Pass-happy Challengers rout Lost River Girls Basketball MERRILL — In 40 years of coaching, Loren King hadn’t seen a more selfless display than the one by his Cascade Christian girls basketball team Saturday. The Challengers amassed 28 assists in a 67-52 Southern Cascade League victory over Lost River. "I’ve never had a boys or girls team with that many assists before," said King, whose team crept closer to a postseason berth. "That’s very pleasing as a coach. It’s nice to coach a team that’s unselfish and tries to give the ball to the teammate that’s open. That’s kind of rare sometimes." Guards Katie O’Brien and Melissa Gmur each had nine assists, and their running mate, Sarah Brown, had eight. Each also scored in double figures, with Brown tallying 16 points, Gmur 11 and O’Brien 10. And each was active on defense, dividing almost equally 14 steals. Advertisement "Our three guards had an outstanding game," said King. Cascade Christian improved to 9-1 in league — keeping it one game behind front-runner Chiloquin — and 17-4 overall. The Challengers gradually built a 31-22 halftime lead, relying on their depth to keep the pressure on the Raiders. "We get a little bit of a lead, then run our second unit in there," said King. "The kids did a good job. We kept working them. It lets us rest each group and keep fresh wheels all the time." Kings also credited Amanda Duchien for adeptly handling Lost River’s press and Catherine McCandless for serving as the Challengers’ last line of defense.
