Read that again! Have these folks been hiding under a rock? Nobody spent like Dubya! — Guy Parker, Prospect How many of us who are retired realize that the government had built up a $2.5 trillion surplus for Social Security? The sad thing is that they have spent all the money and put IOUs in its place. (See article in the Mail Tribune Jan. 27) They also want us to believe that there is no inflation, but they don't factor in food or energy, the things we use the most. Have you noticed that the prices of these two things have really gone north? One other thing I should mention — the government hasn't put a stop on the Federal Reserve printing more money backed by nothing. What do these people we voted into office use for brains? If I were you, I would get a year's supply of food on hand, as we could be in a financial mess in the near future. Even if a financial disaster doesn't come to pass, and I hope it doesn't, you will save quite a lot of money buying items now. — Gordon DeVos, Medford Let me be sure I understand this: We have a lunatic (and convicted burglar) among us, burning down homes, screaming at people and throwing things onto freeways. And we can't lock him up for good because we cannot prove he is "aware of the dangers of his actions"? You're kidding me! What will it take for our "justice" system to realize that the general public has the right to expect protection from a whack job like this? Does he have to murder someone in cold blood — in front of witnesses? What excuse will Judge Mejia find to turn him loose then? I think our "justice" system needs to be burned down and rebuilt from the ground up. — Craig Callaway, Eagle Point On Jan. 19, my wife fell and was injured in the Big Lots parking lot. I was waiting for her in the car. A lady knocked on the car window and told me my wife fell. Two caring ladies, Jo Turner and Kristin Gripp, were beside and caring for her. They stayed with her until the ambulance arrived. Everyone that passed by asked if they could help in any way. Beautiful scenery. Beautiful caring people. This is some of what makes Southern Oregon such a beautiful place to live. — N. A. Newt Likely, Jacksonville I'll make Robert Burnett (Jan. 30) a deal: We'll bar medical marijuana patients from being issued concealed gun licenses when all Oregon law enforcement are required to submit to random drug tests.
