The event, scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, is the 17th and final one of the meet, which kicks off at 11 a.m. today at Southern Oregon University. South Medford, Crater and Grants Pass are expected to fight tooth and nail throughout the two-day meet for the team championship, and with a few breaks, North Medford and defending champion Klamath Union could also be in the mix. The North Medford girls, meanwhile, are a heavy favorite to win a district title for the second time in four years. Advertisement Today’s action is mostly preliminaries, with finals scheduled in the boys discus, long jump, pole vault, high jump and 3,000 meters and the girls shot put, javelin, long jump and 3,000. The Skyline Conference will conduct opening-day qualifying heats Friday on the SOU track and then join the SOC Saturday at 10 a.m. for a double dose of district track. "I’ve got 11 points separating us, Crater and Grants Pass," says South Medford coach Bill Rowan. "Considering all the points that are scored at a district meet (663), that’s nothing. "It looks like it’s going to be a dogfight." The Panthers will be led by senior sprinter Jonathan Klenke, who owns the SOC’s fastest times in the 100 (11.06 seconds) and 200 (22.8) and anchors South Medford’s top-seeded 4x100 relay team. Crater has been the surprise team in the SOC this spring, thanks in large part to the emergence of sophomore middle-distance standout Greg Dallaire. Dallaire has the fastest time in the 400 (50.2) and the third-fastest clocking in the 800 (1:59.21) and will tackle the grueling double this weekend. "He’s been doing it all season, and he wants to do it Saturday," Crater coach Hans Smith says of the double. "He’s a tough kid." Junior Jason James is the Comets’ other top gun. James is the No. 1 seed in the 110 hurdles (14.78) and the 300 hurdles (39.89), and his lifetime best of 11.22 in the 100 ranks second to Klenke. Grants Pass owns just two top marks — Kory Mahr in the triple jump (44-1¼ ) and Trevor Hanlin in the 3,000 (9:01.63) — but the Cavemen have ample horsepower in many other events. The North Medford girls are expected to dominate behind strong performances from sprinters Brittany Hodges and Emily Dunn, hurdlers/jumpers Rosanna Medina and Jenna Siebenlist and distance star Danielle Jordan. The Tornado girls have the top marks in eight of the 17 events.
