Edenstrom helps Eagles take third at wrestling tournament REDMOND - Morgan Edenstrom came to the forefront for Eagle Point during the Oregon Wrestling Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. Edenstrom went undefeated in four matches, with two major decisions, a technical fall and a fall, as the Eagles placed third in the 28-team Class 4A bracket of the dual-meet tournament. In the tournament Class 3A segment, Phoenix lost to Sweet Home 47-12 in the finals. Eagle Point opened its action with a 38-21 win over Pendleton. In the quarterfinals, Eagle Point edged Southern Oregon Conference rival Roseburg, 31-30. The Roseburg dual came down to the final match, in which Victor Shelton won a decision at 160 pounds to move the Eagles into the semifinals. Defending state champion Hermiston defeated Eagle Point in the semifinals 40-22. Hermiston went on to win the tournament with a 33-28 victory over Crook County. The Eagles rebounded with a 33-30 win over Redmond in the third-fourth place dual. Andrew Larsen at 125 was the only other Eagle Point wrestler to finish with an unblemished 4-0 record in the event. Larsen's victories included a major decision and a fall. Eagles posting 3-1 marks were J.P. Sheile (112), Tyson Nelson (171) and Jake Phillips (189). Jason Adams (152) went 2-2 for the Eagles, but Adams' losses were to defending state champion Jeremy Larson of Hermiston and state runner-up Kyle Harzell of Redmond. NOR-CAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - At Anderson, Calif., senior Kevin O'Shea was South Medford's highest placer with a runner-up performance at 171 pounds as the Panthers finished 15th out of 42 teams in the wrestling tournament. Other South Medford placers were senior Ian Rasmussen, fourth at 119, and junior Joe Ramirez, eighth at 275. Senior Ben Vandagrift, who was hobbled with an injured ankle, lost in the quarterfinals. South had eight wrestlers win at least one match. "Ian (Rasmussen) and Kevin (O'Shea) were impressive by putting a solid string of matches together," South Medford coach Ken Thompson said. "But Joe Ramirez was our bright spot. He's getting some victories for the first time." Swimming SOC THREE-WAY - The Crater girls and Eagle Point boys came out winners in the meet at the Rogue Valley YMCA. In girls, Crater edged second-place South Medford, 119-113, with Eagle Point placing third (85). The Comets had three different swimmers win individual events - Megan Leffman (50 free), Chanel Janssen (500 free) and Lane Wallick (100 back) - and captured one of three relays. South Medford picked up double individual victories from Karen Kralik (200 individual medley, 100 free) and Lynea Loeffler (100 fly, 100 breastroke). In boys, Eagle Point's John Cooper won two indiviudal events and swam a leg on two winning relay teams to lead the Eagles to a 111-point total.
