Work begins on Lake Creek school EAGLE POINT -- Construction is expected to begin today on a new school for eastern Jackson County. Contractors are staking out the site for the Lake Creek Learning Center. The Eagle Point district's three-room elementary school is being built near the Lake Creek intersection of Highway 140. The district has signed a construction contract for just over $1 million with Adroit Construction Co., Ashland. Total costs are projected to be less, however, because of work and other contributions by volunteers in the Lake Creek community, says Superintendent Bill Jones. Work has been delayed for about a month as school officials worked out contract details. The district had arranged funding for a $750,000 project, but bids came in high. Jones says the school is expected to cost more than the original budget, but is still within the district's price range. District officials intend to pay off a federally backed construction loan with a special allocation of state school funds. The allocation is credited to the Lake Creek area because of its distance to other schools -- 10-20 miles or more. The learning center is expect to open after Christmas vacation. District officials estimate that the school will open at the middle of the coming school year with about 20 students in one classroom. Glenn D. Hale Elementary School teacher Georgina Kennedy will be the teacher. Kennedy, who lives in Lake Creek has been one of the volunteers working on the community school project.
