In her first foray into politics, Maxwell will spend the next three months campaigning against Republican Dennis Richardson, who won the May primary. Maxwell, 43, is a partner and operations manager for Pacific Turbine Services LLC and an associate broker for Gary Martin GMAC Realty. She is probably best known for her campaign to eliminate local long-distance charges between Rogue River and Medford, an issue still pending with the Oregon Public Utilities Commission. Endorsed by Rogue River Mayor Phil Peeters and Gold Hill Mayor Scott Eilefson, both Republicans, Maxwell says she is interested in working on both sides of the aisle to effect positive change. "Oregon is in a financial crisis of epic proportions demanding a Legislature that is singularly focused on pulling us out," said Maxwell. "We must work together to get Oregon back on track, and the best place to start is in our own back yard by electing representatives who can bridge the gap rather than ones who divide our Legislature. I believe I am that person." Maxwell is also endorsed by District 2 State Rep. Dr. Alan Bates. "What’s exciting is that Shayne Maxwell only knows grass roots," said Bates, "and that’s exactly what we need in Oregon — more people involved in electing their leaders and less money from outside buying elections." Jackson County Democratic Central Committee Chairman Bill Layton said the committee was unanimous in its vote to nominate Maxwell. "Shayne’s campaign slogan is, ‘It’s about people, not politics.’ She is someone who is genuinely concerned about people and meeting their needs," Layton said. Richardson says he welcomes Maxwell as an opponent. "We’re going to have a very busy time for the next three months. The race is on," he said.
