Challengers fall short in comeback against Grizzlies Boys prep basketball GILCHRIST -- The Cascade Christian boys basketball team fought a tough battle in a hostile environment Saturday but couldn't climb out of the hole they dug for themselves. The Challengers trailed by as many as 14 points in the fourth period before rallying but dropped a 64-57 decision to Gilchrist in Southern Cascade League action. "They (Cascade Christian) are a tough team," said Gilchrist coach Kipp Archambault. "We got them down into a deep hole but they managed to fight back." Cascade Christian found itself down by two at the half, 30-28, but sent Gilchrist to the foul line 39 times for the game. Andy Baker was the only Challenger to score in double figures with 20 as Cascade Christian trimmed the deficit to six late in the final period. "Cascade really turned up their pressure defense in the fourth," said Archambault. "They whittled it down late and made things not as comfortable towards the end." Andrew Knotts poured in 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to pace Gilchrist. Teammate Adam Ernst also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Brad Haynes had been averaging close to 24 points per game for the Grizzlies but was held to 11. Gilchrist upped its overall record to 14-3 and moved to an SCL best 3-0. The Challengers fell to 13-4 and 1-2 in conference play. They host second-place St. Mary's at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Geoff Haas helped the Crusaders (14-3, 2-1 SCL) control the boards with 16 rebounds. St. Mary's inside game proved too much for smaller, quicker Bonanza. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 83, NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN 71 -- At Grants Pass, Dusty Harrington and Travis Smeltz combined for 62 points to help Butte Falls remain undefeated in the Skyline A League at 7-0. Harrington led the way with 33 points on 12-of-18 from the field while Smeltz added 29 on 9-of-13 shooting. Harrington also led the Loggers with nine rebounds and four assists while Smeltz nailed all eight of his free throw attempts and picked up four steals. Butte Falls (10-7, 7-0 Sky A) hit 27 of their 47 field goal attempts and drilled 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Prospect (6-9, 2-5 Sky A) trailed 23-17 at the half, but cut the margin to 32-31 at the end of the third quarter. The Cougars tired in the final period as the Cowboys closed with a 15-7 run. Keith Howard added 11 points and six steals for Prospect. North Lake's Tony Ingalsbe led all scorers with 17 points. BRIGHTON ACADEMY 53, HOSANA CHRISTIAN 48 --At Grants Pass, Brighton Academy beat Hosana's fullcourt press with ease to grab a 19-6 lead in the first period and went on to the Skyline A League victory. Aaron Mathews led Brighton Academy with 14 points, all in the first half. Scott Butterbaugh and Paul Kennedy each added 13 points for the Lions, who improved to 6-1 in the Skyline A League and 10-5 overall.
