Weaver was named the county's Employee of the Month Wednesday. At a time when questions are being raised about police officers' use of force when confronting individuals in crisis, both armed and unarmed, Weaver was able to defuse a potentially lethal situation when he and other deputies approached a Gold Hill man who was sitting in a car cutting himself with a knife. When the man got out of the car, Weaver negotiated with him from a safe distance, then was able to shoot a non-lethal beanbag round into the man's leg, causing him to drop the knife and allowing deputies to take him into custody. That's a job well done. Jeers — to the thoughtless people who stole not one but two historical plaques marking points of interest in the county. In the most recent case, thieves took a plaque from the Old Stage Road scenic viewpoint commemorating Old Stage as the county's oldest road. Last February, a plaque commemorating an 1853 peace treaty between the Rogue Indians and Gen. Joseph Lane was pried off its base in the 11000 block of Table Rock Road. The plaques were placed through the generosity of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The treaty plaque was never recovered, and police say it likely was sold or melted down for scrap. Cheers — to the restored Sparta Building, named the recipient of the DeMuro Award by the nonprofit preservation group Restore Oregon. The building at the corner of Riverside and East Main Street is the first in Medford to be given the award, which was established three years ago. Cheers — to three signs that the local and state economy continues to rebound from the depths of the Great Recession. First, new car sales have surged, here and across the country, as consumers trade in cars they hung onto during the downturn for new models. Second, Winnebago announced it would open a manufacturing plant in Lane County, in the former Country Coach RV plant Junction City, bringing 200 family-wage jobs. Third, home sales in Jackson County have jumped nearly 20 percent in the past three months, pushing the median price to $225,000, 9.8 percent higher than a year ago.
