Tornado girls drub Henley, 10-0 If there was any doubt on comparing the top-ranked Class 4A softball team to the third-ranked 3A squad, North Medford settled it Wednesday against Henley in a non-conference contest. The Black Tornado (13-1) showed no mercy and needed only five innings to tame the 3A Hornets in a 10-0 rout. Steph Coe kept Henley at bay with five strikeouts and no walks in tossing the first no-hitter of her high school career. Henley had two runners reach base via error in breaking up her bid for a perfect game. The sophomore pitcher improved to 7-1 on the season. "Steph threw the ball real well," North Medford coach Larry Binney said. Despite North's status as the two-time defending 4A state champs, the Black Tornado showed an ability to maintain focus. "We played very well as a team," Binney said. "Henley's a good team. If we played them again, I don't think it would be 10-0 by any means. Things kind of snowballed on them in the third inning." North put the game away with seven runs in the third, using six hits, three walks and an error to break open a 2-0 ballgame. Kylie Allen smacked her first homer of the season to lead off the third, and her teammates took over from there as the Black Tornado chipped away at the scoreboard. "They just couldn't get anybody out and we hit the ball well that inning," Binney said. Allen, Coe and Erin Glantz each went 2-for-3 for North Medford, while Megumi Hackett was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. Baseball EAGLE POINT 11, DOUGLAS 1 -- At Eagle Point, Mike Newmann hit a two-run homer in the fourth and finished the day with three RBIs in helping the Eagles to a non-conference victory in six innings. Evan Pogue and Justin Whisenhunt each added two hits for Eagle Point (10-4), while Bryan Strodthoff had four strikeouts and allowed four hits in gaining the win. CRATER 12, BROOKINGS 1 -- At Central Point, Craig Knight and Josh Hinojosa both homered to cap a nine-run fourth inning as Crater beat Brookings in five innings for a non-conference win. Hinojosa went 2-for-3 on the day with three RBIs, all from his home run. Knight had three RBIs off three hits, including a two-run homer. The top-ranked and unbeaten Comets (16-0) return to league play Saturday against South Medford. Boys Golf PHOENIX REMAINS UNDEFEATED -- Jason Caplan earned medalist honors in helping the Pirates improve to 5-0 in Skyline Conference action by topping Lakeview and Rogue River at Quail Point Golf Course. The sophomore carded a 3-over-par 73 to finish first, followed by freshman brother Nic Caplan (76) and sophomore teammate Travis Brink (77).
