Medford police detectives had arrested Justin Douglas Jones on July 1 at a campground near Selma after tips led them to connect him with the robbery two days earlier of the Purple Parrot location at 1913 Delta Waters Road. An indictment filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Medford charges him with felon in possession of a firearm, interfering with commerce by robbery and using a firearm during a violent crime. Jones had previously been indicted July 8 on state charges of first- and second-degree robbery and felon in possession of a firearm. According to the indictment, Jones had prior felony convictions in 2008 of second-degree robbery and assaulting a public safety officer and in 1997 of third-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. Those convictions make him eligible for a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act if he's convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also faces a mandatory minimum 7-year sentence if convicted of brandishing a firearm during the robbery. Court records show Jones had also been convicted of two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in 1995 and a state charge of felon in possession of a firearm in 1996. Jones is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on the state charges in lieu of $1 million bail.
