The mural was created by artist Matt Watson just in time for the pool�s opening Monday. Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell City pools to open for summer fun The Hawthorne Pool is opening Monday and the line’s already formed. The city of Medford Friday unveiled a new mural, designed and painted by Medford artist Matt Watson, in conjunction with announcing the city pools are nearly ready for swimmers. The Arts Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department commissioned Watson to paint the mural, which consists of life-size silhouettes of 29 children and adults, along with a couple of ducks, entering the pool area. He said he was approached last winter by the Arts Commission with the idea. "Somebody had seen something similar on a Eugene building," he said. Advertisement The silhouettes took him the better part of two weekends to complete, he said. Watson is curator of exhibits at the Southern Oregon Historical Society and makes all its signs, such as the Hanley Farm sign, he said. He said he hopes other public art projects come his way. "I’m very much available to do that kind of thing," he said. "I enjoy it very much." He said the mural should last 15 to 20 years, or until the building paint beneath it starts to come off. Swim facts Medford city pools open Monday for the summer, closing Sept. 5. Entry prices are 75 cents for youth, $1 for adults. Two-hour pool rental fees are $170 for up to 80 people, $190 for 81 to 120 people, $210 for 121 to 160 people, and $230 for 161 to 200 people.
