SOPTV received $20,000 through the Oregon Heritage Commission to support a documentary on the history of the Applegate Trail. The funds are part of $200,000 in grant money matched by more than $700,000 in contributions from private and public donors. The Southern Oregon project, which will create a high-definition television documentary about the historic trail, is budgeted at about $80,000, said Greg Frederick, program director for SOPTV in Medford. "This is the first of what we hope will be a bit more," Frederick said. The project is a partnership between SOPTV and the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Advertisement The public television station, which is among only 15 stations in the country to produce HDTV programs, will handle the technical efforts. The historical society will provide context, said Executive Director John Enders. "We have historic photos, we have a research library and we have historians," he said. "We’re working on the content side of it." The half-hour Applegate Trail project will be the second high-definition program produced by SOPTV. The first, "Crater Lake: The Mirror of Heaven," will debut at the Ashland Independent Film Festival in April. The program is already scheduled to be aired on public television stations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, northern California and Alaska, Frederick said. Other Historic Commission grant recipients included: The city of Astoria, which received $4,500 to conserve historic building documents. The Clatsop County Historical Society in Astoria, which received $10,000 to complete an exhibit and oral history project telling the stories of the Clatsop Tribe of the Lower Columbia. The Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes of Astoria, which got $20,000 to support a cultural center and exhibit hall. The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles, which got $20,000 to support Lewis and Clark educational programs. The Eastern Oregon Fire Museum and Learning Center in La Grande, which received $14,000 for displays on the history of wildfires in Eastern Oregon. Friends of Kam Wah Chung & Co. in John Day, which received $7,750 for conservation and cataloging of objects at the museum. The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center in Portland, which got $16,350 to document first-person accounts of Japanese-Americans in Oregon. Oregon State Parks Trust in Bend, which got $20,000 for the Collier Memorial State Park logging museum. The Portland Art Museum, which got $10,000 to restore a leather-bound book containing 35 prints of Columbia River Gorge photographs taken in 1867. The Salem Art Association, which got $20,000 for a documentary on two elder artists. The Bosco Milligan Foundation in Portland, which received $20,000 for its historic building artifacts collection.
