Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Family loses home in fire CENTRAL POINT — A family of six was displaced Wednesday after their home caught fire in the 5700 block of Gebhard Road, officials said. No one was hurt in the blaze, which was reported at 11:58 a.m., said Don Hickman, deputy fire marshal for Jackson County Fire District No. 3. When District 3 fire crews arrived at the scene, the 25-year-old mobile home was fully involved with fire. Hickman said a woman who lives at the home reported lighting a fire in a wood stove, then going outside to feed her chickens. A few minutes later, she saw smoke coming from the structure, and ran back inside to get her 2-year-old child. Three other children who live at the home were in school, and the woman’s husband was down the street when the fire started, Hickman said. Flames spread quickly through the home, resulting in $3,000 damage to the structure and $30,000 in lost contents. Hickman said the male homeowner was thankful no one was injured in the fire. Advertisement "He said ‘Everything in there is replaceable, except for my family,’ " Hickman recalled. The American Red Cross is working to provide food, clothing and shelter to family members until they can get back on their feet, Hickman said. A total of 13 firefighters were assisted at the scene by six students from Central Point and Eagle Point high schools who are training with District 3 crews to fight fires. Hickman said fire investigators have not yet confirmed the blaze started in the home’s wood stove.
