Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 24, 2005 Dietz has two assists in SOU win ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University overcame Mother Nature, feisty Cascade College and its own occasional lackluster midfield play in a 3-1 Cascade Conference women’s soccer triumph Friday. A pair of long lead passes by sophomore defender Judi Dietz set up Julia Reed and Kara Bradach for easy first-half goals to help the Raiders (3-5, 2-3 Cascade) recover from an early 1-0 deficit. Most of the first half was played in heavy rain. Cascade (0-7, 0-6 Cascade), which dropped its 38th consecutive game dating back to a 2-2 tie against SOU in November 2002, ended a 10-game scoring drought in the 20th minute when freshman Lori Robertson split a pair of Raider defenders and fooled goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins on a bad-hop direct kick from 35 yards out. Reed, a junior marking back, scored her first collegiate goal seven minutes later — a five-yard grounder that narrowly beat diving Thunderbird goalie Dani Ferris inside the left post. Advertisement Bradach recorded her team-best third goal of the season 53 seconds before halftime on a close-range flick after a three-dribble move. Freshman midfielder Nicole Vilarino, a former North Medford standout, provided SOU with insurance on a point-blank putback of her own miss in the 76th minute. Southern Oregon, winner of six of its last seven contests in Ashland, finished with a commanding 36-4 shot advantage. Reed and Vilarino led all players with five shots apiece. The Raiders continue a five-game homestand at 1 p.m. Sunday against the University of Great Falls. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 3, CORBAN 0 — At Ashland, Southern Oregon looked sharp both offensively and defensively in the Cascade Conference demolition, winning 30-16, 30-12, 30-23 at McNeal Pavilion. The 15th-ranked Raiders (13-3, 5-1 Cascade) notched their fifth consecutive sweep, improved to 23-1 on their home court since 2003 and toppled the Warriors (3-8, 3-4 Cascade) for the fifth straight meeting. SOU senior hitter Nicholette Le Bel compiled her most prolific offensive night in a three-game tilt with a match-high 19-kill, .533 stat line, while senior defensive specialist Haley Phillips led all players with 15 digs and three aces and had a near-flawless passing night. As a team, the Raiders converted an impressive 54 of 101 attack attempts while limiting the Warriors to a .083 clip with 51-33 dig and 5-1 block advantages. "I’m always happy when we have very few unforced errors, and tonight was one of those nights," said SOU coach Paul Elliott, who won his 350th career match. "We talk about wanting to be efficient, and tonight we were." SOU sophomore Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith, who sat out the previous two matches with an ankle injury, went 5-for-7 in Game 2 and is 19-for-33 without error in her past three outings (.576). Junior Rachael Baran (9-for-11), sophomore Shanna Claflin (10-for-20) and senior Jamie McCreary (35 assists in the first two games) also had big nights for SOU. The Raiders’ senior libero, Kristen Lilly, moved within 28 digs of becoming the school’s career leader with 11 successful defenses. The Raiders host Concordia University at 7 tonight.
