Panthers sweep away Comets in season-opener Mail Tribune / Jim Craven South Medford's Teri Silva hooks a finger on the bar, failing to clear 5 feet, 2 inches in Thursday's meet at Crater High. Silva finished second, clearing 5 feet.Craven South's Heather Frigaard paces the Panther girls with a pair of victories in the hurdle events By DON HUNT CENTRAL POINT - Heather Frigaard was one of the top young female hurdlers in the state in the spring of 2000. With the speed of a cheetah and the grace of a ballerina, Frigaard finished seventh at the Class 4A state meet in the 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the 300-meter event during her sophomore year. Frigaard had the potential to be a state champion. But fate dealt her a nasty blow when she broke her leg in two places during a spring-league soccer match in February of last year. With a cast wrapped around her leg for three months and a brace for one, Frigaard missed the entire track season and still wasn't at full strength when the regular soccer season got under way last fall. But she flashed some of her old magic Thursday at Crater High when the Panthers opened their track season against the Comets. Frigaard won the 100 hurdles in 16.2 and the 300 hurdles in 48.8 in helping the Panthers to a 101-44 victory. She also ran a leg on the Panthers' winning 4x100 relay. The South Medford boys, meanwhile, needed a sweep in the 3,000 and a win in the 4x400 relay to eke out a 74-71 victory. "It feels great to be back," said Frigaard, who hadn't competed in a hurdles race in 22 months. "My times weren't great, but all I really wanted today was to get through the races cleanly and build a little confidence for the next time out." Frigaard has a lifetime best of 15.4 in the 100 hurdles and 46.4 in the 300 hurdles. The school records in the two events are 14.7 and 44.1, times that Frigaard believes are within her reach. "That's one of my goals, to get a school record," said Frigaard, who is taking two personal conditioning classes at South Medford in addition to partaking in track practice. South Medford coach Bill Rowan is thrilled to have his star hurdler back. "She makes us a lot better," Rowan said. "She's our top hurdler and she strengthens our relays." The South Medford girls won 13 of the 17 events and swept the discus, triple jump and 200 meters to win going away. Freshman sprinter Kaylyn Knutson had a strong debut for the Panthers, winning the 100 in 12.8, the 200 in 26.9 and running a leg on South's short relay. Sophomore Stephanie Anderberg also had a good day as she won the pole vault (8-6), javelin (101-71/2) and ran a leg on the Panthers' triumphant 4 x 400 relay. Junior Natasha Wright equaled her lifetime best of 16-3 to win the long jump. Rowan believes the South Medford girls have one of their best teams in school history. "They've got a chance to be very good," he said. "It's a matter of how committed they are and how much they buy into what we're trying to do." Freshman Kendel Nelson provided the Crater girls with half of their victories as she claimed the 1,500 in 5:09.4 and the 3,000. The latter race wasn't timed. In the boys meet, Chris McLean, Noah Lewis and Kyle Lundwall went 1-2-3 in the 3,000 to draw the Panthers close enough to win the meet if they could capture the final event, the 4 x 400 relay. That proved to be little problem as Kelly and Tyler King, Alondo Pacas and Shaun Olson clocked 3:33.6, more than three seconds ahead of the Comets. Jonathan Klenke was South's MVP on this day, however, as the junior sprinter had a hand in four victories. Klenke won the 100 in 11.5, the 200 in 23.5, ran a leg on the Panthers' winning 4 x 100 relay and sailed to a blue-ribbon mark of 41 feet in the triple jump. "That's the first time Jonathan has ever competed in the triple jump," Rowan said. "He had a great day." And the Panthers needed one from Klenke because three of their other top sprinters - Andres Reed, Justin Baldoni and Dan Hilgendorf - sat out the meet with injuries. South Medford also got strong efforts from Olson in the 800 (2:00.5), Jason Matthews in the 300 hurdles (40.7) and sophomore Tyler King in the long jump (19-51/2). Chris Dearmon pocketed a pair of victories for the Comets - the shot put (55-9) and discus (140-1). Dearmon was only seven inches off his lifetime best in the shot put but was aiming for something bigger. "I've been over 57 feet in practice, and I felt good in warm-ups, and so it was a little disappointing what happened out there today," said Dearmon, who is coming off a state championship in wrestling. "But I know I've got a 60-foot throw in me." Other top marks for the Comets included a time of 51.9 by Trevor Palmer in the 400 and a winning effort of 12-6 by Adam Reed in the pole vault.
