The interagency fire team assigned to the blaze, the largest wildfire in Oregon so far this summer, reported the fire had grown to 2,635 acres Friday morning, with 6-percent containment. On Thursday, crews started a burnout operation on the northeastern section by using drip torches — on the ground and from the sky utilizing a helicopter — with the intention of carrying fire along an indirect line just south of Buckskin Peak to create a barrier between the line and the main fire. The fire, sparked by a lightning strike that roared to life June 11 , is burning about 10 miles southwest of Cave Junction. A portion of the fire is burning inside the footprint of the 2002 Biscuit fire, which burned half a million acres. Fire officials said Thursday's burnout operation had to proceed slowly because of strong winds from the west that blew some embers over the containment line. "That's a major concern with burnouts," fire spokesman Jacob Welsh said. "These embers are going to fly across the line, and that's why you have the holding resources. They're there to make sure they don't ... start other spot fires." Crews plan to move south and continue burnout operations along the eastern containment line until it ties in to the line on the southern flank. "This operation will likely last several days and increase the amount of smoke affecting nearby communities," an interagency fire news release said. Welsh added the smoke could drift as far as the Rogue Valley, depending on wind activity. Little action continues on the western flank, although two 10-person contingency crews are in place monitoring the activity. On Friday, 581 personnel were assigned to the fire, including 12 hand crews, seven dozers, six engines, 13 water tenders and 11 helicopters.
