SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: Park resurfacing delayed during winter Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News As someone who frequents Holmes Park, I see that notices have gone up declaring that the city is going to resurface the tennis court, basketball court and picnic area from Oct. 1 through June 30. As I write this question on the morning of Oct. 7, I see that not so much as a picnic table has been moved. My questions are: When are they really going to start this project? And, why is it going to take nine months to resurface an area less than half a football field in size? — Adam, Medford We're here to answer all your park resurfacing queries, Adam, although you've probably already answered your first question in the past week. "There was a lapse in time due to contracting," Tim Stevens, parks maintenance supervisor with the city of Medford said. "(The project has) actually begun the start of this week." Stevens explained that preparation work on the project started this week, involving the removal of old asphalt. The next phase is to amend the undersoil below the paved surfaces. Stevens said he anticipated the new asphalt will be installed by the end of next week or the week after. That's assuming factors such as weather and contractor schedules go according to plan. Stevens also explained that work on the project has to be paused during the winter months. "The asphalt has to cure for a certain amount of time before the coating can go on," Stevens said. Even if the asphalt work is completed by the end of October, the coating needs two weeks to cure in mild weather. "They said that any coating that goes on in winter months cannot be warrantied," Stevens said. "That's why the timeline is pushed out so far." Stevens anticipates the coating phase to begin by the middle of March, if the weather cooperates. "Once the coating is down, all the fencing goes back up and the project is complete," Stevens said.
