A.M. Update Buzzer-beater topples Power PORTLAND -- Tari Phillips' layup with two-tenths of a second left Sunday gave the Colorado Xplosion a 72-71 victory over Portland in the Power's ABL home opener. Edna Campbell had 27 points for Colorado, which trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half. Dana Wynne added 17 points, 11 in the third quarter. Portland's Natalie Williams, last year's league MVP, had 23 points, 19 in the first half, while Katy Steding added 19. Trailing 68-58 with 3:24 left in the game, Colorado (1-1) went on a 12-1 run to take its first lead of the game, 70-69, with 40 seconds remaining on a layup by Wynne. Steding made two free throws with 16 seconds left to give the Power (0-2) a 71-70 lead. With 2.2 seconds left, Portland's Sonja Henning tied up Keisha Anderson, but the possession went to the Xplosion. Anderson then found Phillips under the basket on the inbound pass and the 6-foot-3 center laid it in for the winning basket. REIGN 106, LASERS 86 -- At Seattle, Kate Starbird matched her career high with 25 points and the Seattle Reign set a franchise record for points. Niesa Johnson had 22 points and Val Whiting added 21 for the Reign (2-0), while Shalonda Enis had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil led the Lasers (1-1) with 22 points and Jennifer Azzi added 21. Men's Basketball No. 22 INDIANA 76, SOUTH CAROLINA 55 -- At Indianapolis, Luke Recker scored 22 points to lead four Indiana players in double figures in the NABC Classic. The Hoosiers (2-0) scored the game's first eight points and the Gamecocks (0-2) never drew closer than five at they had nine turnovers and shot just 2-of-9 in the opening eight minutes at the RCA Dome. Indiana went on to lead by 14 three times in the opening half, which ended with the Hoosiers leading 39-27. National Hockey League LIGHTNING 3, DEVILS 1 -- At Tampa, Fla., Michal Sykora scored the game-winning goal with 17:39 left in regulation. Daren Puppa stopped 34 shots as the Lightning (6-6-2) reached the .500 mark for the first time since Oct. 10, 1997 -- a span of 91 games. The Lightning are 6-2-1 over their last nine games. BRUINS 5, HURRICANES 2 -- At Greensboro, N.C., Dmitri Khristich and Darren Van Impe each scored two goals and Ray Bourque moved into fourth place on the NHL career assist list as Boston beat Carolina. Carolina came into the game with the most points in the Eastern Conference (15) and fresh off a pair of road wins, but Boston rallied with three straight power-play goals after the Hurricanes went ahead 1-0. FLAMES 3, AVALANCHE 1 -- At Calgary, Alberta, rookie goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere sparkled in his Calgary debut, making 39 saves to lead the Flames. RED WINGS 3, MIGHTY DUCKS 2 -- At Anaheim, Calif., Brendan Shanahan scored the go-ahead goal twice in the third period and set up another. The victory ended a four-game losing streak by the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions. OILERS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2, OT -- At Chicago, Josef Beranek's power-play goal 34 seconds into overtime helped the Edmonton Oilers extend the Chicago Blackhawks' winless streak to six games.
