He was born in August of 1930 in Marion, S.D. and moved to Oregon in 1943. Carroll graduated from Willamette University with a degree in music education. He married the love of his life, Jackie Belt, in 1951. He started his first teaching position at Knappa-Swenson, Ore. The Korean War interrupted his career for two years as he served in the U.S. Army. After the war, he was offered a teaching job in Glide, Ore. and later in Medford. He began at Hedrick Jr. High School, continuing on to Medford MidHigh where he finished his career (due to cancer.) He loved his students and put on an operetta every year to provide a place for them to apply what they learned in class. One year an operetta included a squeaky pig and on another occasion, a very stubborn donkey. Everyone seemed to enjoy being in the operettas, so he would often have 200 or more students involved in the production. Exchange concerts with his younger brother, Charles, were a highlight of each year. His choirs won awards at many competitions. Carroll loved to sing. Church choir, Chorale and impromptu groups, quartets and solos were ways he enjoyed his gift and spent his spare time. Eastwood Baptist Church enjoyed his directing ability for 41 years. He arranged music to fit their abilities and needs. Above all, he valued his family. Many backyard ballgames, fishing trips, and vacations filled Carroll's time as well as fishing, tennis, and volunteering at the hospital. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and supportive interest in others. Carroll is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie; his children, Pam (Jim) and Loren (Diane); his three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016, Eastwood Baptist Church, 675 N. Keene Way Drive, Medford, Ore. A light reception will follow the service. Memorial gifts may be given to Eastwood Baptist Church, The American Cancer Society, or the Rogue Valley Chorale.
