The intersection of Hillcrest Road and East McAndrews Road has been identified as unsafe, so city engineers are presenting their solution to committees and the council for approval again. East McAndrews currently ends at Hillcrest Road with a stop sign. The proposed change would put a stop sign on eastbound Hillcrest at East McAndrews, allowing eastbound McAndrews and westbound Hillcrest traffic to continue without stopping. John Pearson, area resident and Citizens’ Planning Advisory Committee member, says with a nearby intersection where Barbara Jean Way comes into Hillcrest, the proposed plan is not safe. "Purposely putting in two three-way intersections was just a bad idea," he said. Advertisement Pearson would rather see a four-way intersection with a traffic signal that includes the nearby Barbara Jean Way. Pearson said the city’s proposal is not very different from the one that the council rejected two years ago. "My main concern at the time, and still is, it’s unsafe and it’s a foolish use of taxpayer money," he said. But Cory Crebbin, public works director, says this is the best solution and it makes the intersection safer. Crebbin said installing a signal requires several criteria to be met, such as high traffic volumes, and it is not warranted in this case. Also, Barbara Jean Way is a private road serving a small development and traffic volumes are extremely low there, he said. The concerns with the current intersection, said Crebbin, have to do with the intersection being on a sloped curve, which engineers can’t do much about. He said engineers determined the safest alternative was to put a stop sign on Hillcrest, making McAndrews onto Hillcrest a through-street. The plan is being presented to the joint transportation subcommittee at 3:15 p.m. today in Room 151, Lausmann Annex, 200 S. Ivy St., and the Planning Commission 7 p.m. Thursday, Council Chambers, City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St., Medford. The proposal will go before council probably in May, according to Crebbin.
