The party preceding the football game between the two schools is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the practice field adjacent to the stadium. Tickets, for $3 each, are available at the activities offices of both schools and will be sold at the gate. Ex-South soccer player Lower honored by WCC MORAGA, Calif. — Former South Medford soccer standout Patrick Lower, now a sophomore at St. Mary’s College, has been named West Coast Conference co-player of the week. Lower scored two goals in the championship game of the Saint Mary’s Soccer Classic, earning him WCC honors alongside Portland’s Christopher Sanders. Advertisement Lower’s is the first such honor under Gaels coach Steve Rammel. "Patrick has worked hard on his game, and it shows the work is paying off," said Rammel. "He is a kid who is very serious about soccer, and he has made the most out of his opportunities." The tournament title came in a 2-0 win over the Columbia Lions and was St. Mary’s first since 1996. Lower tallied the game’s first goal when he scored from close to 25 yards away off an assist by Matthew Fitzgerald and Alex Christlieb, a freshman from Ashland, just 1:54 into the game. Lower struck again in the 34th minute when he headed in a Matthew Walker pass. He and Walker were chosen the tourney’s co-offensive most valuable players. Lower now has five points on the season, with two goals and one assist. Former North player Mitchell player of week SALEM — With a pair of 21-kill performances in Western Baptist volleyball road victories over No. 11 Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, Kendra Mitchell, a junior from North Medford, was chosen Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I player of the week. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker attacked at a .289 clip and delivered 14 digs, two blocks and an ace as the Warriors upset Southern Oregon on Friday and knocked Oregon Tech out of a tie for first place on Saturday. Both contests were decided in five games. With her eighth kill at Southern Oregon, Mitchell moved among the program’s offensive elite in just her second season as a Warrior. Following a freshman year at the University of Portland, Mitchell is now ninth at Western Baptist in career kills with 578. An all-conference performer as a sophomore, Mitchell is currently third in the league in kills per game (3.92) and fifth in attack percentage (.307). An injury forced Mitchell to miss seven matches early in the season in which Western Baptist lost four. However, the Warriors (10-6 overall) have won seven of the last eight and are in second place in the conference with a 6-2 record.
