Humboldt sweeps away RiverDogs EUREKA, Calif. - Steve DeClerck's big day at the plate couldn't offset a Southern Oregon RiverDogs doubleheader loss to the Humboldt All-Stars in amateur baseball Saturday. Humboldt dropped the RiverDogs to 16-15 on the season with victories of 4-3 and 6-4 at the College of the Redwoods. The RiverDogs' eight errors on the day contributed to both losses. DeClerck, a North Medford High graduate now attending Sacramento City College, went 5-for-9 in the twin bill with a double and two triples. In the opener, Southern Oregon starter Casey Campbell (3-3) allowed just two earned runs and five hits. But a pair of two-run, two-out singles by Jess Crosswhite spelled the difference. The RiverDogs scored all their runs in the fifth inning. Tim Alvarez got the rally started with a one-out single. After Charlie Jensen walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. DeClerck followed with a two-run single. DeClerck advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Greg Reynolds and K.C. Rumrey walked. Andy Bartels accounted for the final run with an RBI single. Southern Oregon threatened to tie the game in the seventh when DeClerck opened with a triple. But reliever John Wheeler got Rumrey on a ground out and struck out Bartels and Mike Newmann to record the save. Wheeler was the story of Game 2 by registering the victory on the mound and going 4-for-5 with a solo home run. Only one of Humboldt's runs was earned in the nightcap. The RiverDogs trailed 4-1 entering the seventh before scoring three runs to tie the game. Rumrey singled to open the inning, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Abe Lupkin walked and DeClerck cracked a two-run triple. After Nate Mayben walked, first baseman Steve Christian bobbled Alvarez's high chopper, allowing DeClerck to score Southern Oregon's final run. The RiverDogs complete the three-game road series against Humboldt with an 11 a.m. nine-inning game today. FIRST GAME S .O.
