The site will be off Peninger Road, in an undeveloped area containing several fishing ponds. The project will also include improvements to the pond area. According to a press release from the county, the project will be funded by the county and overseen by its parks program, which will then manage the site as a county park. The county-owned land the project is being built on was previously managed by the Jackson County Fair Board, but management authority was transferred back to the county in August to facilitate the construction of the park, the release said. The RV park will be built to accommodate larger recreation vehicles and will include water, sewer, electrical service and Wi-Fi Internet service throughout the site. Most RV slips will be pull-through sites and will be a minimum of 60 feet in length, with some up to 75 feet for very large RV’s. The park will include three bathroom buildings with flush toilets and showers, a covered shelter for group events and a park headquarters building. John Vial, roads and parks director for Jackson County, said in the release that the site is ideally suited for RVs and should have an immediate customer base. “We have a huge demand in Jackson County for additional overnight RV parking," Vial said, noting that the site is next to Interstate 5 and the Expo, and in a centrally located area for day trips to Southern Oregon attractions. In addition to the construction of the RV park, the project will include enhancement of day-use facilities serving the fishing ponds, including a paved parking area, restroom, paved walkways and improved bank-side fishing access for those with limited mobility. The property was partially obtained with federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grants and as a result must be used for public outdoor recreation purposes. Jackson County has had plans for more than 25 years to build an RV park somewhere near the Expo, the release said. Helen Funk, Expo director, said the RV park will be a good fit with the Expo, which also serves as the county fairgrounds. “This park being located immediately adjacent to the Expo grounds creates wonderful partnership activities where fairgrounds users can enjoy activities on the fairgrounds and then walk a short distance to a great county park to spend the night,” Funk said in the release. Revenue from the park will help support Jackson County’s parks program and Expo operations. Construction of the RV park will close public access to the north Expo ponds starting Oct. 12 and continuing until the project is completed in 2016. While access to the north ponds will be closed during the construction, the Oregon Department and Fish and Wildlife plans to shift its fall trout stocking schedule and stock the large pond south of the main Expo grounds.
