RVT 03B Red soars into tournament title game By Danny Penza Updated: May 29, 2022 09:04 PM A A With plenty of time to enjoy a late lunch Sunday afternoon, the Rogue Valley Timbers 03B Red boys could sit back knowing full well they had secured a spot in the U19 Cascade bracket’s championship game at the Rogue Memorial Challenge. RVT 03B Red picked up two more victories on the second and final day of bracket play, beating BUSC 5-0 and SOSA Oregon Unidos 2-1 in comeback fashion, to finish a perfect 4-for-4 ahead of today’s championship game at Lithia & Driveway Fields. RVT 03B Red, which finished with 35 points, will face Elk Grove 2003B Elite for the Cascade bracket title, which is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. Elk Grove 2003B Elite was one of three teams that had a chance to finish in second place and advance to the championship game against RVT 03B Red. They finished with 24 points, ahead of Rogue Valley Timbers 03B Black (19 points) and SOSA Oregon Unidos (15 points). RVT 03B Black and SOSA Oregon Unidos will play in the third-place game. “We’re really excited to be a part of the championship,” said RVT 03B Red coach Sean McManamon. “All credit to the boys — they responded well, especially from being 1-nil down (against SOSA Oregon Unidos). ... They’ve been working hard all year to lead up to this moment, so they’re really excited to be a part of (today’s championship game).” In Sunday’s opener, RVT 03B Red built a 3-0 lead going into the half thanks to goals from Jorge Mejia, Edgar Lopez and Cash Cota. Victor Martinez added a pair of second-half goals to put the game out of reach. Repeating what happened Saturday, RVT had to dig out of a 1-0 hole in its second game Sunday. Lopez pulled his team level 10 minutes into the second half before Daniel Palomino scored the game-winning goal with five minutes to go on a blast from around 30 yards out that went into the top corner of the SOSA Oregon Unidos goal. “They just refocused, came back as a team, took a nice little breath of air,” said McManamon of his team. “We knew we were going to win, so we just had to go about our plan and execute. It was one of those things where we were frustrated to be down 1-0 and don’t like being down 1-0, but they obviously knew the game plan and stuck to it. They went and executed and now we’re really excited to be a part of tomorrow’s opportunity to go lift a trophy.” In the girls U19 Cascade bracket, Rogue Valley Timbers 03G Red was able to advance to today’s championship game despite not picking up a win in both of its games Sunday. RVT 03G Red played out a pair of draws — first a 2-2 result against Azzurri FC 04G Blue then a scoreless affair with NSS Missfits ‘03/’04. RVT 03G Red will face Azzurri FC 04G Blue in today’s 9:30 a.m. championship game, while RVT 06G — which also played to a pair of draws Sunday — faces NSS Missfits ‘03/’04 in the third-place game.
