Jesse "Jess" Heller Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 1, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 1, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Jess Heller passed away April 21, 2016 at Rogue Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born April 23, 1926 to Jesse Elwin Heller and Alma Olive Heller in Brownsville, Texas. Jess graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, as a civil engineer. He was a proud Longhorn! His engineering career began in Texas for Humble Oil Co. (later owned by Exxon) and continued in Louisiana, Washington, and California. His work involved many facets of engineering, from building off-shore drilling platforms to surveying oil and gas leases. The last 20 years of his career were spent in San Francisco, Calif. working for PG&E, designing hydro-powered generating plants, huge transmission towers, and planning for anticipated plants. Jess retired in 1983 (early!). He and his wife, Kay moved from Marin County, Calif. to Medford, Ore. His first retirement “job” was to build his own house. Jess then became the building chairman for the new sanctuary at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He also traveled to Mexico with the church youth group to build homes. His next job was as building chairman for Habitat for Humanity in Medford. Jess loved all these projects! Jess and Kay traveled all over the world. His favorite country was Australia, and he even learned to play the didgeridoo. Jess and Kay also traveled throughout the United States in their RV. Jess was a great outdoorsman. He loved fly-fishing, hunting, horseshoes, gardening, hiking, golf, and tennis. He was an avid birder and enjoyed birding in his backyard, or Belize, or Australia. Jess was also a gourmet chef. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kay (his biggest fan); daughters, Wanda, Nicki, and Susan; grandchildren, Alethea, Gracia, Tom, and Sarah; his great-granddaughter, Zoe; his sister, Motie; his brother, Ray; and many nieces and nephews. Jess will be greatly missed by all. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Medford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Youth Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
