Mail Tribune 100, June 17, 1922 By Alissa Corman Updated: Jun 20, 2022 04:39 PM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago June 17, 1922 STREET DANCING ENDS CELEBRATION PROSPERITY WEEK Main street, between Bartlett and Central was jammed last night when the big public street dance started as the final wind-up event of the Prosperity Week celebration. Throngs of people who danced and watched the dancers, crowded the sidewalks on the block. Launspach’s orchestra on an auto truck arrived shortly after nine o’clock and struck up the music, but the dancers seemed timid at first and did not start gyrating over the confetti sprinkled pavement until the orchestra had played three or four pieces. Applause for the orchestra, however, was generous. Finally the young people were unable to resist longer and the dancing started. About 9:45 Fire Chief Lawton arrived on the scene and found Bartlett street at Main street packed with cars so tightly that it was completely blockaded. He began requesting them to move and rearrange so as to allow a passage large enough to accommodate the fire truck should a fire take place and should it be necessary to run the truck on Bartlett street. A little later Councilman J. W. Dressler arrived and still later Patrolman Charles Adams. The three men finally made room enough on the thoroughfare for the fire department should it be called. While the dance was going on a special Shriners train of the Portland Al Kader temple passed through the city and stopped for some time. A number of the Shriners walked down Main street and picking out attractive young ladies in the crowd danced several dances before they were forced to leave and catch their train. The orchestra started the strains of “Home Sweet Home” at 11:00 p.m., and the crowd broke up and departed quickly. Everyone who participated in the dance or watched it, enjoyed it. LOCAL AND PERSONAL There was a good Saturday public market this morning at which there were plenty of dressed hens on sale, but few fryers. The market opens at 6:15 a.m. these summer days. ------- The city auto camp presents an animated appearance nightly because of the presence of so many tourists camped there. Thirty-seven persons who arrived during Friday spent last night at the camp. ------- Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ashpole of Eagle Point were among the out of town visitors in the city Friday. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
