The National Weather Service says a front will move into the region Wednesday and put an end to the unseasonably warm weather that set a high-temperature record last week in Medford and chipped away at the Mt. Ashland Ski Area's still-sizable snowpack. The snow level that has lingered above 7,000 feet will plunge Wednesday to 3,000 feet above sea level, likely dropping up to 3 inches on Interstate 5's Siskiyou Summit by the time it peters out Thursday, according to the weather service. Up to 10 inches are forecast to fall at Lake of the Woods off Highway 140 near the Jackson/Klamath county line, and as much as 15 inches is predicted at Crater Lake, the weather service reports. The low snow level means several inches of new powder is forecast at the ski area, where General Manager Hiram Towle and crew always want to see the snow level drop to at least 6,383 feet — where skiers and snowboarders board the Windsor lift, the lowest-elevation chairlift on the mountain. It will be the first snow in two weeks at the ski area, where daily temps regularly have warmed above freezing then backed down at night. "It's been a thaw-freeze cycle for a while," Towle says. "A nice freshening up with snow will be great. It's been a while, so we're happy." The mountain has received 212 inches of snow so far this season, a winter with El Nino ocean currents and weather patterns that traditionally have served the ski area well, Towle says. And he'll take early February's dearth of fresh snow because it's certainly no "Jun-uary" like in past years, Towle says. "The weather's been playing with us a bit of late but, by and large, we know we're blessed," Towle says. In Medford and elsewhere on the Rogue Valley floor, the new front will be more of a nuisance as a quarter-inch of rain is forecast Wednesday through midday Thursday, weather service meteorologist Michelle Cohen says. While a high of 66 is forecast for today, the temperatures in Medford will drop and bottom out in the high 40s Friday, according to the weather service. Another front that so far appears to be similar to Wednesday's front will likely move into the region Friday evening, but it's too far out to forecast rain or snow amounts, Cohen says.
