Michael Brewer passed for two touchdowns and Virginia Tech’s defense stood tough at the end and the Hokies stunned the eighth-ranked Buckeyes 35-21. “I still have confidence that we have enough skill on this football team to get by people,” he said. Then he added, “It didn’t look like it (tonight). But we have to get by people or you’re going to see what you saw today every week.” Keyshoen Jarrett had two interceptions and Donovan Riley returned another 63 yards for a TD in the final minute before a record crowd of 107,517 at enlarged Ohio Stadium. It was a huge win for a Virginia Tech program that had lost 11 games the last two years and had gone from perennial juggernaut to a national afterthought. “I think this is a big, big win for this program, for the status of this program,” coach Frank Beamer said. Virginia Tech had talked all week about a spotlight victory to conjure up the program’s better days under Beamer, now 226-109-2 in his 28 years in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Hokies definitely did that. But Beamer wasn’t talking about a Hokies renaissance. “I don’t know,” he said when asked if Virginia Tech had regained its national prominence. “We have to build on this win, learn from this win.” NO. 1 FLORIDA STATE 37, CITADEL 12: At Tallahassee, Fla., Jameis Winston threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and Florida State set a school record with its 18th consecutive victory. Winston completed 22 of 27 passes and the Seminoles (2-0) scored touchdowns on all four first-half drives and field goals on his two third-quarter drives. The Heisman winner sat down with a 34-0 lead. Aaron Miller was 3 of 11 for 46 yards and a touchdown and ran for 61 yards for the Bulldogs (0-2). NO. 2 ALABAMA 41, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 0: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Blake Sims had 214 passing yards and Jake Coker threw for 202 to lead Alabama past Florida Atlantic in a game halted by lightning. Both quarterbacks got a chance to stake a claim to the starting job for the Crimson Tide (2-0) in the one-sided game. Both schools agreed to end the game with 7:53 left. Sims passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third in his second straight start and didn’t play in the fourth quarter. He was 11-of-13 passing. NO. 4 OKLAHOMA 52, TULSA 7: At Tulsa, Okla., Sterling Shepard had a career-high 177 yards receiving to help Oklahoma rout Tulsa. Trevor Knight passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score. Alex Ross ran for 90 yards and a touchdown, Keith Ford rushed for 87 yards and two scores and Blake Bell, a converted quarterback who now plays tight end, caught his first career touchdown pass for the Sooners (2-0). It was Oklahoma’s sixth straight win overall and eighth in a row in the series against Tulsa (1-1). Tulsa’s Dane Evans passed for 204 yards, and Keevan Lucas caught 10 passes for 84 yards. NO. 5 AUBURN 59, SAN JOSE STATE 13: At Auburn, Ala., Cameron Artis-Payne ran for three touchdowns, all in the first half, and Auburn used a dominant ground game to beat San Jose State. Auburn (2-0) had six touchdowns and 358 yards on the ground, including 112 from Artis-Payne. Quarterback Nick Marshall, making his first start of the season, ran for 103 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown on his final drive late in the third quarter. Blake Jurich threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ervin in the opening quarter but had two first-half interceptions for San Jose State (1-1). NO. 9 TEXAS A&M 73, LAMAR 3: At College Station, Texas, Kenny Hill threw for 283 yards and four touchdowns in less than three quarters as No. 9 Texas A&M rolled to a 73-3 win over Lamar on Saturday night in front of the largest crowd for a college game in Texas history. It was the first game in the newly renovated and expanded Kyle Field and drew a record crowd of 104,728. After a lightning delay of 2 hours, 5 minutes, Texas A&M (2-0) wasted no time getting going. Hill found Speedy Noil for a 44-yard pass on his first throw and Trey Williams had a 33-yard touchdown run two plays later to make it 7-0. Hill threw touchdown passes of 24, 51, 18 and nine yards in his second game since taking over for Johnny Manziel. He threw for a school-record 511 yards in an upset at then-No. 9 South Carolina last week. NO. 10 BAYLOR 70, NORTHWESTERN STATE 6: At Waco, Texas, Baylor backup Seth Russell threw for 438 yards and five touchdowns while playing only the first half, and freshman KD Cannon caught three of those scores. Cannon went streaking past the secondary for TD catches of 50, 81 and 42 yards in the first quarter. He finished with six catches for 223 yards, the second-most in school history even without playing after halftime. The Bears (2-0) came through just fine without senor quarterback Bryce Petty, the reigning Big 12 offensive player of the year, and several injured top receivers. They won their 12th straight home game, and have scored at least 69 points six times in that streak. Petty cracked two small bones in his back after taking a hit on his first series in the home season opener.
