Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. An Ashland man’s passion for football turned to tragedy this year when playing left him paralyzed. Joy re-entered the man’s life just a few months later with the birth of his daughter, now 4 months old. He and his fiancée, both 22, moved into a wheelchair-accessible apartment. But the couple and their child are mostly homebound for lack of transportation that would connect them to community activities and services. A specialized van is even further out of reach, since the couple’s car, which they had hoped to sell, broke down. While saving for car repairs and the van’s $18,000 cost, the couple would appreciate funds toward either, as well as taxi services or bus passes. The couple has lived on disability since the semiprofessional football game where the man’s helmet collided with another player’s on the Medford field. The die-hard Chicago Bears fan had been working for Veterans Affairs in Roseburg. Though she used to work full-time, the woman now spends her day caring for the baby and helping her husband with physical therapy. Throughout her fiancé’s two-month hospital stay, the woman remained by his side. They moved from California last year to escape drugs, gangs, high crime rates and negative influences. Healthy Families Oregon has supported the couple’s efforts since the birth of their daughter. The program’s home visitors help to cultivate and strengthen parent-child relationships, which promotes healthy childhood growth and development. By enhancing a family’s function and providing protective factors, the program reduces risk, including child abuse and neglect.
